Stirks Report

A large crowd of buyers were in attendance at the popular monthly sale keen to secure all classes and types of stirks, many leaving unable to fulfil orders. Vendors left today sales well suited with prices achieved.

The sale peaked at £850 for a 10 month old Charolais x steer from D&J Hay, Cockerham closely followed by a pen of 9/ 10 month old Aberdeen Angus x steers achieving £830 from G & D Ball, Little Eccleston with another Aberdeen Angus x achieving £830 R&J Parkinson. British Blue x steers sold to £800 from JE Harrison. With other younger 7/8 Charolais x steers achieving £790 again from D&J Hay, Cockerham who sold Fleckiveh to £780. A ring full of proper Friesian steers 8/10 month old from R&J Parkinson sold at £690. Bull stirks sold to £580 for a Holstein Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham, with a 6 monthly old bf from EE Thornton & Son, Morecambe selling at £560.

Calf Report

A few less calves for today with farmers taking advantage of the fine weather to get field work done. Sale peaked at £440 for a Charolais x heifer calf from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham who sold others regularly at £405-£425. British Blue calves (5weeks old) sold to £400 and £395 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Preston who sold younger sorts to £290-340. Native sired calves today sold to £300 for a month old Aberdeen Angus x bull from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with others to £275-£290. Young heifer calf’s sold to £215 from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with others at £210 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Preston.

Dairy bred calves sold to a top price of £410 for a weaned Holstein Friesian from WG Farms Ltd, Cockerham who sold other at £390 and younger Montbeliarde at £370. JT&B Fox, Quernmore sold 10 week old Holstein Friesian to £240.

Store Cattle Report

Store Cattle continue to sell to the recent high rates with a top price of £1600 for a pair of Charolais x steers from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer closely followed by Aberdeen Angus x from J&H Davis, Cabus selling to £1570 with British Blue x selling for 1550 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse and Limousin x achieving £1540 from RG&LR Holmes Carnforth. Dairy bred steers sold to a top price of £1390 for a Montbeliarde from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with others at £1320 from J Lamb, Lancaster who also sold Fleckviehs to £1260. Holstein Friesians sold to £1240 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. All steers today average £1300.88.

Heifers sold to a top price of £1390 for Aberdeen Angus x from JD & EM Bracken, Garstang with others at £1380 from KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling, with Herefords to £1370 from CE&MA Hewitt, Forton, and British Blue x to £1360 V&S Fitzell, Much Hoole. Limousin x sold to £1260 from MJ Waller, Lupton. All heifers today average £1154.63. Young feeding bulls sold to a top price of £1160 for a Limousin from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton with a pen of Montbeliarde achieving £960 from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Young suckler bred bulls sold to £860 for 9 monthl old Simmental x from R Eshborn Lancaster.

OTM and Cast Cattle Report

Cull cows to an overall market average of 167.9p/kg and £1063, with 2/3 of the entry being parlour type dairy cows. Heavy well fleshed cows sold to 199.5p/kg for a Limousin x from AT Rogerson, Chipping closely followed by Aberdeen Angus x to 194.5p/kg from WJ&LA Barker, Carnfoth and Simmental and British Blue x cows from SJ Gunn, Milnthorpe. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 194.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from EW&RM Towers, Hornby with Holstein Friesians selling to 189.5p/kg from PW&JM Norris & Son, Hornby with other well fleshed cows regularly at 180-190p/kg depending on breed and quality.

Top grossing cow today was Aberdeen Angus from WJ&LA Barker, Carnforth selling at £1517 with Dairy Cows selling £1498 for a Holstein Friesian from EW&RM Towers, Hornby.

OTM heifers sold to 224.5p/kg for a British Blue x from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with a Limousin x from AT Rogerson, Chipping selling to 219.5p/kg. OTM Dairy heifers sold to 211.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from Barker Farms Ltd, Cockerham. Top grossing OTM was a British Blue Heifer from M Shepherd selling to £1571 with Dairy OTM heifers to £1317 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. OTM Steers sold to 239p/kg and £1385 for a Limosuin x from J&M Cockett, Ingleton.

Serval cull bulls sold to a top price of 199.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus from H Hesketh & Sons, Preston. A Beef Shorthorn bull from EW&CR Clegg & Son grossing the top price of £1779.
