Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 14th January 2022

CALVES AND WEANLINGS
Lancaster had a large entry of 133 calves forward today, that were met with a mixed trade. Best quality calves were eagerly bid for and remain very buoyant, with younger and smaller types slightly harder to place as many are cautious of the ever spiralling rearing costs. Taking top spot today at £444 with a British Blue bull at 2 months and 6 days was RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens, whom sold others to £400. This was closely followed by the consignment of British Blue bulls JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal selling to £420, £400 and £390. Charolais bull calves sold to £390 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Aberdeen Angus bull calves peaked at £370from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Weaned British Blue heifers sold to £375 and £370 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with other Blue heifers to £350 from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens. Dairy bull calves saw 2 month old Montbeliardes twice sold to £360 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Black and Whites peaked at £150 from Karen Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe.
STORE CATTLE
The store cattle trade remines very buoyant with Lancaster once again proving the place to sell short keep cattle. The market topper at £1690 was a pair of Limousin bullocks from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. This was closely followed by other Limousin bullocks to £1580 from CF Hogarth & Son, Burneside. The next call was £1540 for a pair of Limousin Bullocks from H Chapman & Son, Middleton who sold Blondes to £1490. Native bred bullocks saw Aberdeen Angus’s sell to £1440 from G Sagar & Son, Caton with other Angus’s to £1380 from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton followed by Hereford bullocks selling to £1360 from Lucas Breeding, Adlington. The heifer trade peaked at £1500 for a Charollais from Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton as Aberdeen Angus heifers topped at £1330 from SJ Brass, Ingleton with others to £1320 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1330 for Fleckveihs from J&M Cockett, Ingleton.
OTM CATTLE
The weekly sale of OTM cattle at Lancaster had an increased entry of 128 forward selling to an overall market average of 136p/kg. The trade in general saw all types selling to an increased trade except the really lean types. OTM steers led the way selling to 290p/kg for Fleckviehs from J&M Cockett, Ingleton and grossed at £1240. Charolais OTM steers sold to £1363 and £1350 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Dairy heifers sold to 194.5p/kg and 189.5p/kg from J&H Bland & Son, Levens with Black and White heifers selling to a top of £1291 from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Beef cows today sold to 187.5p/kg or £1406 for a Limousin from Mason & Gardner, Chaple le Dale. With other beef cows selling to £1337 for a South Devon from Lucas Breeding. Limousin cows sold to £1313 from EJ Ward & Sons, Neither Kellet. Plenty more sold into the £1200’s. The trade today saw plenty of best meated dairy cows sell between 145-150p/kg as dairy cows sold to a top of £1172 a head from RG&B Lewis, Middleton.
