Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 11th February 2022

Calves and Weanlings

The numbers of calves and weanlings at Lancaster auction remain buoyant with an entry of 79 forward, with calves and weanlings to suit the requirements of all buyers in attendance. A cracking consignment of bull weanlings forward from EW & R Towers, Hornby met plenty of demand ringside as British Blues sold to £505 and £490 with Flekviehs selling to £505, £495 and £490. Weanling British Blue heifers sold to £485 and £465 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel. Holstein weanlings twice sold to £250 firstly from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel and Hannah Kent, Cockerham.

British Blue bull calves sold to £430 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with others to £360 from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham and David and Eileen Wallbank, Abbeystead. British Blue heifer calves sold to £320 from JM & MH France, Littledale. Native bull calves sold to £300 for Angus’s from Lawson’s Farm, Cockerham. Younger calves were sharper today with a few fresh faces ringside purchasing these types.

Store Cattle
Valentine’s Day maybe approaching but there was no love in the air between the Lancaster buyers, as they fiercely fought to secure all sizes and types of cattle. Averaging an impressive £1163.
The competition for the top spot today was spicey as numerous pens of quality cattle sold in excess of the £1400 mark. Top spot of £1490 was twice achieved, firstly by JD&GM Bracken, Catterall with a pen of three British Blue bullocks and matched by a Charolais bullock from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling, whom also sold a pen of three Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1460. A couple of Charolais bullocks from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland sold to £1480. The consignment from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet sold to £1450 for a Simmental bullock, with a pen of three Charolais bullocks to £1400 from the same home. The consignment of British Blue bullocks from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe sold to £1440 and £1420. Plenty of pens of strong beef bullocks regularly sold in the late £1300’s.
WA Hodgson, Whinfell led the way in the heifer section selling Charolais’s to £1420, with Aberdeen Angus heifers peaking at £1300 from JB Moore, Grange over Sands. British Blue heifers peaked at £1280 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. Followed by others to £1270 from Blackburn & Wood, Out Rawcliffe. Other noted prices for beef bred heifers saw a pair of Aberdeen Angus’s to £1250 from K Lupton, Thornley.
The consignment of dairy bullocks from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse sold Fleckviehs to £1400, Montbeliardes to £1300 and a pen of four Holstein Friesians to £1290. Dairy heifers saw Fleckviehs sell to £1250 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling.

Breeding Cattle
A pedigree Limousin bull consigned by RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead was met by much interest following the power of social media and sold at £2200 rising 7 year old.

OTM Cattle
Lancaster continued to boast one of the best cast cattle rings in the North, as all cattle forward averaged an impressive £961.34. The overall market average was 149.76p/kg for 98 forward.
OTM Limousin heifers led the way selling to 239.5p/kg or £1377 from RH&C Ayton, Abbeystead. Other OTM heifers sold to 209.5p/kg or the top price of the day of £1443 for a Stabiliser from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Other noted prices for OTM heifers were Aberdeen Angus’s to 219.5p/kg and 199.5p/kg for M Allen, Yealand. OTM steers saw a Aberdeen Angus sell to 229.5p/g and 219.5p.kg or £1338 from T&E Burrow, Slyne. Friesian OTM Steers sold to 154.5p/kg, grossing a whopping £1421 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. Dairy today sold to a sharper trade, peaking at 199.5pkg or £1348 from DJ Clarke Farming, Barnacre with others to 194.5pkg from J&N Hull & Sons, Winmarleigh. Cast cows saw Limousins sell to 189.5p/kg and 184.5p/kg from L Atkinson, New Hutton. The leading prices for beef cast cows being £1420 for a Stabiliser from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens. British Blue cows sold to £1253 from M&L Preece, Kirby Lonsdale. Best dairy cows today sold to 159.5p/kg for an 8 year old Holstein Friesian cow from I Atkinson & Son, Warton that grossed at £1390. Plenty of good meated dairy cows sold between 150-155p/kg. Top price per head for a dairy cow today was £1393 for a Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. Other Holstein cows to £1243 from AW&MA Park & Son, Ellel and £1220 for Montbeliards from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe.
