Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Sale of Calves, OTM, Dairy and Store Cattle. Friday 26th August 2022

Calves & Weanlings

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw the summer show kindly sponsored by Semex and Norbreck Genetics and was expertly judged by regular buyer David Cumming, Preesall who we thank for his time and expertise. The Champion rosette was awarded to Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead for a British Blue bull selling at £390 with the judge backing his decision and purchasing it. Second prize in this tough class was awarded to AD&R Milnar, Claughton on Brock also with a British Blue bull and selling to a final bid of £370. D&K Howarth, Hambleton secured the third prize rosette with a young Limousin bull selling to £210. In the heifer class the Wallbank Family had a good day also securing first prize with a British Blue selling to £225, with Graham Billington, Claughton on Brock taking the second and third place rosettes.
Out of the show saw a quality consignment of mainly 2 month old calves from RE&P Miller, Barnacre selling to £380 for a British Blue bull with Blue heifers from the same good home at £270. Limousin bull calves sold to £290 from DJ Clarke Farming, Garstang with Limousin heifers to £240.
Native bred calves today saw Aberdeen Angus bred calves to £310 for a bull from JK&BJ Birkett & Sons, Morecambe with Aberdeen Angus Heifers to £200 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre.
Just a handful of Black and White bulls in today, selling to £150 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with lesser sorts at realisation.

Dairy Cattle

Andrew Swale, Blackburn was once again at the top of the prices at Lancaster Auction with his pedigree heifer 'Phoenix Flower Art' which sold for a final bid of £3100.
A consignment of heifers from Drinkall Bros, Overwyersdale sold to £2880 for 'Pennine Canary 192' with another from the same home achieving £2720 for 'Pennine Crocus 306' Buyers present for all classes and types with all heifers sold averaging £2310.

Store Cattle
The weekly sale of store cattle saw similar numbers on the week, with no let up in trade and a ring full of new and returning buyers.
Taking top price honours and understandably with the quality of the cattle they shows went to T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton with a pen of four Simmental bred steers achieving a final bid of £1770. Aberdeen Angus cattle which are easily sold at Lancaster saw steers £1600 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with others to £1540 from J Hartley, Preston. A good run off quality cattle from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man saw his Charolais steers to £1280 with others to £1270 from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton. Regular Lancaster supporters SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet saw British Blue Steers to £1450 with others loyal customers M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling at £1380. Dairy bred steers saw Montbeliards to £1400 from J Hartley, Preston with Friesians to £1370 from JS Clarke & Sons, Catforth. All steers today averaged £1215 with many strong cattle in the mix.
Store heifers averaged £1120 for a plainer show of cattle on offer today. Top of the leader board today was three cracking Limousins selling to £1500 from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Not far behind at £1480 was EW&CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with four Shorthorn heifers. J Oddie & Son, Balderstone broke the £1400 barrier at £1410 for an Aberdeen Angus with others from the same home at £1310. M Shephard & Sons, Pilling sold British Blue heifers to £1320 and £1300 with E Rossall, Preesall selling Simmentals to £1360 and G, GU&D Swarbrick to £1320.

OTM Cattle
Fridays OTM cattle sale saw 98 cattle through the bottom ring with the upcoming bank holiday Monday not affecting the trade. Achieving a respectable market average of 173p/kg for all classes and types.
Top grossing OTM cattle today saw Pip Simpsons, Troutbeck Luing bull making a chart topping £1741 with other bulls from JP&V Townley, Quernmore to £1358 for an Aberdeen Angus.
Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham had a good day selling Friesian cows to a fantastic top of £1688, £1596 and £1544. RW&FJ Rhodes, Ellel broke the £1500 barrier with Stabilisers to £1556.
Just a handful of OTM steers in today, selling to a top of 239p/kg or £1681 and 237p/kg or £1626 for Aberdeen Angus’s from B&J Preston, Caton.
Topping the pence per kilo today in the cast cows was a British Blue cow from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands with Limousin beef cows to 217p/kg from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston.
Dairy bred cows sold to 211.5p/kg from AT Burrows & Son, Gressingham with others at 209.5p/kg from J&N Hull & sons, Winmarleigh.
OTM heifers from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale saw British Blues to 227p/kg or £1296 with other beef bred heifers to 214p/kg or £1525 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton. Friesian heifers sold to 221p/kg from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham.
