Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 24th September 2021

CALVES & WEANLINGS

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster saw a reduced entry this week after last weeks bumper entry, topping the trade today in the weaned calves section was T&G Dobson, Appleby with a British Blue bull selling to £545 with others British Blue bulls from the same home at £505. T&G Dobson also had weaned British Blue heifers at £445. R&P Miller, Barnacre sold weanlings to £290 for Friesian bulls. younger calves today were well bid for, topping at £445 for British Blue bulls from regular vendor JP&C Robson, Catterall who also had other British Blue bull at £425. British Blue heifer calves continued to be in big demand at Lancaster topping at £365 from CR&A Baxter & Son, Middleton. T&CM Kelsall, Chipping has a good run of calves in today, topping at £410 twice for Aberdeen Angus bulls with others at £400. Aberdeen Angus heifers from JE&SM Seedall, Blackburn sold at £160. A handful of younger Friesian bulls in today topping at £165 from CR&A Baxter, Middleton.

STIRKS
The monthly sale of stirks saw well bred good stirks sort after but plainer sorts harder to place, as an autumnal feel fills the air. Topping the trade was a British Blue bull at £900 from C&J Smith, St Michaels. Steer stirks saw Simmentals top at £830 from CD&HL Mason, Lancaster who also sold Charollais steers at £810. Angus steers sold to a top of £760 from local vendor J&CW Metcalfe, Quernmore who also sold Limousin steers to £740 for a pen of three. British Blue steers saw MD Close, Arkholme sold to £620. Dairy bred steers saw Fleckvieh at £680 from CD&HL Mason, Lancaster with Friesians to £500 from G Rawlinson, Manchester. British Blue heifer stirks from P Rossall, Scorton sold to £700, while a trio of Limousin heifers from J&CW Metcalfe, Quernmore sold at £540. More stirks are required for our next monthly sale at Lancaster.

STORE CATTLE
Lancaster had on offer 320 store cattle, there was a more average show of cattle forward selling to a similar trade.
Leading the way was a pair of British Blue bullocks consigned by K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel realising £1450, with JD & GM Bracken, Garstang selling to £1380. In the Native cattle section an Aberdeen Angus topped at £1360 from JD & GM Bracken, Garstang, with J Hesketh, Hutton and J Oddie & Son, Balderstone selling to £1340. Beef Shorthorns consigned by R & K Jenkinson, Holmes Farm sold to £1340. Herefords from N & R Kellet, Cockerham peaked at £1210, followed by D Fox & Co, Holly House Farm at £1190. A run of B&W’s consigned by EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton sold to £1080.
The heifer trade met a top of £1460 followed by £1390 for British Blues from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Aberdeen Angus’s hit £1350 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Poulton Le Fylde,with JB Moore, Allithwaite to £1320. Limousin’s consigned by MJ Waller, Lupton peaked at £1210.

OTM CATTLE
Lancaster had another good entry of 128 Cast Cattle, which averaged out at 130p. With more numbers forward prices for dairy cows were slightly easier. As abattoirs struggle to kill cattle due to staffing issues and carbon dioxide shortages this also reflected in the trade.
Topping the trade was a British Blue cow consigned by R Packham, Docker selling to £1401.56 or 209.5p/kg. Aberdeen Angus cows sold to £1166.75 or 179.5p/kg from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton. B&W’s peaked at £1129.95 from M & E Forshaw & Son, Thornley or 17.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. A Limousin bull consigned by JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall topped at £1378.39.
