Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Monday 13th September 2021

PRIME LAMBS 


Once again, the Monday morning sale of prime lambs at NWA Lancaster saw a keen and competitive trade for all classes and types, with a market averaged of 232p/kg achieved. Well finished lambs were the order of the day, selling to a marking top of 274p/kg for Texel x lambs from RA Richards, Lancaster. Beltex x lambs sold to 272p/kg from JS Horner, Ingleton, with other pens of ¾ and pure-bred lambs regularly selling at 260-270p/kg.
Charollais x lambs sold to 233p/k from J France, Garstang with Suffolk x lambs from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham selling to 226p/kg. A reduced number of hill lambs forward today, with many vendors attention turn to breeding sheep sales. Those forwards were well rewarded with Mules selling to 232p/kg from P&C Parker, Greenhow with others to 222p/kg from CF Hargreaves, Overton and Horned lambs to 212p/kg from T Smith, Pilling.
Leading the sale today was a consignment of Texel x lambs from JS Horner, Ingleton selling at £130 and £127, with others achieving £124 from both TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and JM & MH France & Son, Littledale. Other heavy weight lambs regularly £105 -£115. Medium weight lambs sold to £110 for Beltex x from T&L Kirkham, Chorley and Suffolk x sold to £107 from J France, Garstang. Mule lambs sold to £102 from CF Hargreaves, Overton with Cheviots selling at £95 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale.

CULL SHEEP
A large entry of cull sheep forward today saw a fast and competitive trade with buyers once again keen to purchase early on a Monday morning. Heavy well fleshed ewes attracted the keenest interest seeing Texels sell at £138 M&S Blease, Carnforth, £137 J France, Garstang and £134 R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £113 again from J France, Garstang whom also topped the Mule section achieving £95.
A larger number of hill ewes forward today saw Cheviots sell to £96 from R Doran, Winmarleigh with medium Swaledales to £56 from DM Eames, Abbeystead. Several cull tups forward today saw Texels sell to £128 from RA Richards, Lancaster. Closely followed by Dorsets from MJ & LC Lund, Quernmore achieving £124.


STORE LAMBS


The fortnightly sale of store lambs saw an overall market averaged of £80.37 achieved, with half the entry being hill bred lambs. The sale topped at £87.50 for Charollais x from JM Kelsall and son, Quernmore. The annual consignment from SE & J Gorst, Littledale sold wether lambs at £83.50-£82 with gimmer lambs selling at £81.50 and £81. A consignment of longer keep Texel x lambs sold to £78.50, with others at £78 and £74.50. The next sale of store lambs is on Saturday the 2nd October, as part of the annual ‘Hill Fair Day’ vendors are encouraged to enter all classes of breeding and store sheep with confidence.
