Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 3rd September 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS


Lancaster had an increased entry of 100 calves forward today, with top quality calves continuing to be a strong trade with younger calves slightly less than last weeks flying trade but still looking well sold. Continental bull calves led the way in Lancaster with British Blue bulls selling to £450 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne. Charolais calves always meet plenty of demand in Lancaster with bull calves from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling to £450 and heifers from the same home to £405, £390 and £385. Four-week-old Charolais bull calves from RT Halhead, Cockerham twice sold to £420. Plenty of continental bull and heifer calves continue to sell easily over the £300 mark. The native calf trade today in Lancaster saw Hereford bulls sell to £390 and £360 from Drinkall Bros, with a younger offering of Angus bull calves today selling to £340 from CJ & MH Parry, Cockerham. Dairy Bull calves peaked at £285 for Montbeliardes from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with others twice selling to £275. Black and White bull calves sold to £165 and £145 from WD & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE

This week at Lancaster there was an offering of 276 store cattle forward with the edge slightly off the trade but still some impressive market averages as all steers forward averaged £1101 and heifers averaged £1055. Limousin steers took the top spot this week selling to £1420 from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Other continental bullocks saw Simmentals sell to £1380 from T&M Halhead, Carnforth, with British Blues also achieving £1380 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. Lancaster always has a good trade for native store cattle with Angus bullocks selling to £1400 from J&H Davis, Cabus. Angus heifers also peaked at £1400 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine. Dairy bullocks sold £1320 and £1310 from H Birkett & Son, Overton with Black and White bullocks selling to a top of £1200 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton.

OTM CATTLE

This week at Lancaster there was 88 OTM cattle which saw cast cows selling to a strong market average of 144p/kg. The cast cow ring at Lancaster continues to offer a very strong trade for cast heifers, bulls and steers. Cast Angus heifers led the way selling to 207.5p/kg from C Hargreaves & Son, Overton with others from the same home to 199.5p/kg, with this price for Angus heifers also matched by M&C Greenwood, Middleton. Plenty more OTM heifers regularly selling around the 190p/kg mark. OTM Black and White heifers twice sold to 184.5p/kg topping at £1160 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Two-year-old Limousin bulls sold to 199.5p/kg or £1296 from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Under Barrow. Similar aged Montbeliarde bulls sold to 181.5p/kg or £1399 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Limousin cast bulls peaked at £1642 from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Limousin cast cows peaked at 179.5p/kg from SM Watson, Ulverston with beef cows peaking at £1339 from JA & G Gardner, Treales. Best meated dairy cows regularly sold between 155p/kg and 160p/kg. Lancasters dairy cow trade continues to lead the trade over many other local centres, Peaking at £1239 from MS & G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale, £1212 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and £1186 from J Hogarth & Sons, Slyne.
