J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle - 2nd September 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS

The fortnightly sale saw 102 calves forward, all calves sold to their full value once again at Junction 36 with strong well grown calves selling to a keen interest. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth once again topped the calf market at Junction 36 with a British Blue bull selling to £480, other British Blue bulls sold to £445 from B Mallinson & Son, Levens. All British Blue bulls forward averaged an impressive £380. FT & CE Hodgson, Pennington sold an impressive run of calves with Limousin bull calves to £425 and Simmentals from the same good home selling to £415. A young show of native bred bulls were forward with Angus’ selling to £305 from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal, others from the same home sold to £300 twice. All heifers sold to a sharp trade, with once again British Blues leading the way, selling to £400 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Other Blue heifers sold to £390 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington. A big show of dairy bred bulls forward today which saw Fleckvieh sell to £250 from JM & IM Wilson, Whitbeck, this good home also sold Montbeliarde to £235. A young show of Black and Whites forward sold to a top of £105 from J Scott & Co, Cark in Cartmel. Medium type rearing Black and Whites were regularly selling at the £60-£70 with an overall average of £75 for all forward.
A nice show of 80 stirks forward with a full ring side of buyers in attendance, insuring all stirks were sold to their full value. Friesian stirks led the way today selling to £830 from TK Robinson, Old Hutton who also sold a full pen of British Blue bullocks to £760. A nice run of Limousin bulls from R Eshborn, Glasson Dock sold to £760 at just 5 months old. Native bred stirks were eagerly bid for once again at Junction 36 with Angus bullocks selling to £740 from R Lawson & Son, Burton in Kendal.

STORE CATTLE
Another fast and competitive trade was seen for all classes of store cattle with vendors leaving suited with the prices achieved.
Steers sold to a top price of £1285 for a pair of Lim X from MA & JA Whinn, Burneside closely followed by J Twigge, Lindale selling Char X, AA X and Sim X at £1230. Plenty of steers £1050-£1200 to include Montebeliardes at £1090. Yearling steers sold to £975 from A Thompson, Carnforth with Cha X at £945 from I R Cooper, Penrith.
Heifers sold to £1235 for a Lim X from MA & JA Whinn, Burneside with a run of Lim X and AA X from J Hayton & Sons, Barrow in Furness selling to £1205. Stronger heifers regularly selling to £1050-£1150 with yearlings selling £1070 for a Cha X from I Dobson, Hincaster with other well bred sorts £880-£1000.

CAST COWS
Cull Cows sold to a top price of 184.5p/kg for a Lim X from S W Atkinson & Son, Crook who sold others at 177.5p/kg. Heavy and well fleshed beef cows regularly 155p/kg-170p/kg. Top grossing beef cow achieved £1350 from JW & HM Metcalfe & Son, Gatebeck with a Lim X from J Twigge, Lindale achieving £1245.
Dairy Cows sold to 147.5p/kg from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness with other heavy and well fleshed cows 138p/kg-145p/kg with mediums 120p/kg-135p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow achieved £1308 from WB Winder & Co.
Cull Cows averaged 142p/kg or £901.
Several OTM heifers forward today selling to 207.5p/kg or £1363 from LA & M Lambert, Lupton.
