Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 12th November 2021

CALVES & WEANLINGS

Lancaster had a large entry of calves last Friday but saw even more forward this week. Good quality calves in Lancaster book the trends and continue to sell to the heights of the summer trade, with smaller and younger calves less money than the flying summer trade but as good as the trade seen anywhere in the area.
Leading the way today was an Aberdeen Angus bull calf from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling to £445, with other Aberdeen Angus bull calves from the same home selling to £350. Eight - nine week old British Blue bulls sold to £430, £425 and £395 twice from JP&C Robson, Catterall. Also breaking the £400 barrier was a five week old British Blue bull from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock selling to £430. Charolais bull calves peaked at £425, from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. A run of Hereford weanling bulls from TE&M Kidd, Ellel sold to £425, £390 twice and £385. Some cracking three month old British Blue heifers sold to £360 twice from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Weanling Black and White bulls sold to £250 from Hannah Kent, Cockerham. With younger Black and White bull calves to £150 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham.

STORE CATTLE

Good quality, in specification cattle continue to be in huge demand. A cracking run of cattle from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling saw Aberdeen Angus and Charolais steers selling to £1450 with other Aberdeen Angus steers from the same home achieving £1390. Limousin steers peaked at £1420 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse, who sold British Blues to £1380 and Aberdeen Angus’s to £1330. A pen of three Limousin bullocks sold to £1380 from R&A Easterby, Westhouse. Closely followed by Charolais bullocks to £1370 from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Black and White saw bulls peak at £1260 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. The heifer trade this week peaked at £1320 for a pair of British Blues from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling. Norwegian Red heifers sold to £1210 from EW&R Towers, Hornby.

OTM COWS

The cast cow capital of the North keeps charging on with a bumper entry of 149 forward, the trade this week was very similar to previous weeks except for leaner cows which were a slightly easier trade. Clean heifers led the way selling to 249.5p/kg or £1621 from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton. This was closely followed by Limousin heifers selling to 234.5p/kg or £1315 from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Over thirty month old heifers saw Simmentals sell to 209.5p/kg or £1152 from BW&LM Kirkby, Wennington. Dairy heifers sold to 191.5p/kg or £1254 from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. Plenty of dairy heifers selling in excess of the £1100 mark. Cast steers peaked at 204.5p/kg for British Blues from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton. Cast steers sold to a top price of £1636 for Long Horns from The Wild Life Trust for Lancashire. Beef cows sold to 169.5p/kg for Welsh Blacks from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer. The best dairy cows regularly sold around the 140p/kg mark with Fleckviehs selling to £1181 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens, followed by Friesians selling to £1160 from TR Baldwin & Son, Forton. Plenty of good dairy cows selling in excess of the £1000 mark.
