Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Store Cattle, Friday 7th May 2021

CALVES AND STIRKS

Lancaster’s weekly sale of calves and weanlings had a slightly reduced entry of 61 forward, but once again all specifications were eagerly bid for and met a strong trade. The continued success of Lancaster’s calf sale was seen once again with many vendors returning, as well as new vendors selling calves with us, all leaving well chuffed.

Stealing the headlines once again was the consignment from J & G Thornley, Kirkham, with Charolais bull calves topping at £650 and British Blue bulls from the same good home to £640, £615 and £600. British Blue heifers from this consignment sold to £500 and £480. Other noted prices were six week old British Blue bulls to £585 from J & A Sheerin, Quernmore.

A run of weanlings from Joshua France, Pilling saw British Blues to £485 and Aberdeen Angus’ to £430. A great run of Hereford calves from TE & M Kidd, Ellel saw bulls sell to £465, £455 and £400 with heifers topping at £460. There were plenty of beef calves regularly selling between the £300 and £400 mark. British Blue bulls averaged £465 and heifers £362. Hereford bull calves averaged £440, Hereford heifers averaged £333 and Aberdeen Angus heifers £289.
Weanling Black and White bull calves sold to £315 from Joshua France, with others to £285 from TE & M Kidd, Ellel. Montbeliarde bull calves peaked at £280 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green, who also sold Fleckvieh bull calves to £240, £235 and £230. MRI bull calves peaked at £245 from N Mason, Barnacre. Black and White bull calves averaged £121.20.

STORE CATTLE
Lancaster’s weekly sale of store cattle had an offering of 277 forward and saw the trade equally as strong, despite the recent talks of the prime cattle prices hardening although the future forecast remains optimistic from the Beef industry.

Well fleshed short keep cattle continue to be a very strong trade, with more grazing type cattle available today at Lancaster. Once again, a cracking consignment from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe led the way selling Montbeliardes to £1500 and British Blues to £1490. This was followed by the consignment from L Parsons & Sons, Levens selling British Blue steers to £1460 and British Blue heifers to £1400. J Prest & Son, Bay Horse had another good trade with his short keep cattle, twice selling to £1460 for Aberdeen Angus and Fleckvieh bullocks, with other Angus bullocks from the same home achieving £1370. Two pairs of British Blue bullocks sold to £1430 and £1410 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling. A pen of three Charolais bullocks from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet sold to £1410. 18% of the cattle forward today sold in excess of the £1300 mark.

OTM CATTLE
The cast cow trade today was equally as good as the previous week, with an overall market average of 154.3p/kg. Lancaster continues to offer a great outlet for OTM heifers with Limousins selling to 229.5p/kg from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. A consignment of OTM heifers from T Foley saw British Blues sell to 229.5p/kg, 221.5p/kg and 217.5 p/kg with Charolais heifers from the same home to 224.5p/kg twice and 221.5 p/kg. There were plenty of young OTM cattle in excess of 200p/kg.

Beef cows sold to a top of 201.5p/kg or £1535 from Barlow Brothers, Croston. Other Limousin cows sold to £1424 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme, with Simmentals to £1306 from Barlow Brothers and British Blues to £1305 from AC & CM Carter, Witherslack. Best dairy cows sold between 160-170p/kg, topping at £1314 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne with other dairy cows to £1274 from Lawson Dairy, Cockerham, £1264 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe, £1260 from TL Baldwin & Son, Thornton, £1256 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel and £1252 from JE & J Pye & Son, Quernmore. Limousin cast bulls sold to a top of 187.5p/kg or £1781 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet
