Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of prime hoggs at Lancaster had a similar number of hoggs forward to last week, selling to a continued strong trade. An overall market average of 259p/kg achieved, with over a third being horned hoggs. Peter Anderton, Scorton took the top spot selling heavy weight Texel’s to a top of £150. A consignment of Beltex hoggs from R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby sold to £149, £148 and £145 three times, this consignment peaking at 372p/kg. All Beltex hoggs forward averaged £146. Andrew Butler’s consignment sold to a top of £141 and £140 twice. Texel hoggs from J Bargh, Heaton with Oxcliffe sold to £138, Suffolk hoggs topping at £136 and £134.50 from Cardwell Farms. The trade saw the best conformation hoggs easily sell beyond 300p/kg and more off these needed for our butcher buyers at Lancaster. All Texel hoggs forward averaged £120.63, all Suffolk’s averaging £119.63.
A large number of upland hoggs saw 44kg Cheviots sell to £122 from J & H Davis, Cabus. Masham hoggs topped at £121 from Dave and Karen Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Cheviot Mules selling to £120 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead and Swaledale hoggs from the same home sold to £104.50.

Cast Sheep

Plenty of demand for cast sheep at Lancaster with another good trade. Texel tups sold to a top of £156 from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale and Texel ewes from the same home selling to £122. Other Texel ewes to £114 twice from S Wilson and Son, Scotforth and J & A Sheerin, Quernmore. Messrs Sheering also sold Mule ewes to £98 and £96 with others from Peter Anderton, Scorton selling to £97.
Hill sheep saw Herdwick shearlings sell to £100 from Andrew Butler. Horned ewes sold to £78 for Dalesbreds from FK & F woodhouse, Scorton with Cheviot ewes to £74 from SE & J Gorst, Littledale.
