Calves and Stirks

Lancaster’s weekly sale of calves boasted the largest number forward of 91 in the local area this week. Best calves in short supply and selling to a strong trade. Younger beef calves and black and white calves easily sold, native heifer calves in less demand today and looked value for money. The consignment from J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold British Blue bulls to £470, £455 twice and Angus bulls to £450. British Blues from the Walmsley’s, Cockerham sold to £445. Charolais bull calves sold to £410 from the Sutcliffe’s, Cockerham. Plenty of best quality beef bull calves selling around the four hundred pound mark with many breeds averaging over £300. British Blue heifers sold to £380 from AD & R Milner, Brock and others to £360 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Black and white bull calves sold to £160 from Sutcliffe’s, Cockerham, £155 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping and £150 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre. All black and white bull calves averaged £105.

Store Cattle

Lancaster store cattle continues to go from strength to strength, the trade as hot as it has been for a while with a varied show of cattle on offer today. The only thing wrong today was that there wasn’t twice as many cattle, which could have easily been handled with the number of buyers present. The consignment from JA & LR Wilson, Millom took the top spot selling Limousin bullocks to £1460 and £1390. British Blue bullocks topped at £1430 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Simmental bullocks sold to £1360 and Limousin’s to £1320 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. The consignment of Charolais and Simmental bullocks from J Hesketh, Hutton peaking at £1340 for both breeds. Other noted prices were Limousin bullocks selling to £1330 from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham. Plenty of bullocks selling towards to £1300 mark. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1290 from J Prest and Son, Bay Horse. All bullocks forward averaged £1143.90.
British Blue bulls sold to £1210 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton.
The consignment of heifers from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet saw Angus’ sell to £1200 and British Blues to £1190. Limousin heifers sold to £1180 twice from JA & LR Wilson, Millom and David Preston, Caton.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle.

There was less OTM Cattle forward this week, more are needed much to the advantage of the vendors with trade being very solid. The entry of 87 forward sold to a very impressive average of 132p/kg. R & B Parker, Killington took top spot selling Angus OTM heifers to 199.5p/kg or £1334. Also achieving 199.5p/kg was ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth selling a Limousin grossing at £1294. Dairy heifers sold to a peak of 181.5p/kg from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with top gross price at £1203 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Beef cows sold to a top price per head of £1246 from CM & CA Jackson, Caton with Charolais cows selling to £1184 from GJ & G Billington, Garstang. Best dairy cows today sold towards 150p/kg, selling to a top of £1138 from JP & C Robson, Garstang. Others sold to £1079 and £1049 from L Burrow & Sons, Lower Tatham.
