Prime Hoggs

A stronger trade this week as we start another month. Hoggs in most demand today, were handy weights and best quality butchers hoggs, more desperately needed each week. Best butchers quality hoggs selling in the region of 300p/kg. Taking the top spot with Beltex hoggs at 328p/kg and also 311p/kg was JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. Closely followed by Andrew Butler selling to 309p/kg followed by 306p/kg from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe and T & E Burrow, Slyne selling to 305p/kg. The consignment from L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle sold to 300p/kg.
Heavy weight Texel hoggs from George Sanderson and Family, Catforth selling to £141. This was followed by Beltex hoggs from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore selling to £140. Andrew Butler’s weekly consignment of Texel and Beltex hoggs sold to £140 and £133. Texel’s from T & E Burrow, Slyne sold to £134. L & A Duckett, Higher Bartle enjoyed a good day with their consignment of Texel hoggs selling to £132, £130, £129 and averaging at £124.50. J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe sold to a top of £126 with Texel’s. Plenty more pens of continental hoggs often selling in the region of £120.
Hill-bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £114 weighing 45kg from J Bargh and Son; Mashams from FK & F Woodhouse, Scorton selling to £113. Mules topped at £110 from AT Alcock, Inskip. Horned hoggs peaked at £100 for Swaledales from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with 38kg Swales from the same home to £95.50. There was an overall market average of 247p/kg, which was strong considering a large number of hill-bred and heavy weight hoggs. Handy weight hoggs averaging 258p/kg. All hoggs forward averaged £105.87 per head.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade remains very similar with buyers cautious of over-fat sheep. Texel ewes took top spot this week selling to £116 from MB Flatman & Son, Over Wyresdale. Other continental ewes sold to £108 and £100 from Jason Moss, Warton. Plenty of continental ewes sold into the nineties this week. Tups sold to £96 from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Mule ewes peaked at £82 from D & J Hay, Cockerham. Horned ewes saw Scotch Blackfaces sell to £64 from P Kaye, Brindle.
