Store Cattle

Lancaster Auctions weekly sale of store cattle had a good offering forward selling to a continued strong trade. A Limousin bullock from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale topped the market selling to £1330. British Blue bullocks sold to £1270 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Angus bullocks saw a pen of three sell to £1250 from L Parsons & Sons, Low Levens followed by another pen of three selling to £1240 from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton followed by £1230 for a pen of four from DR Preston, Caton. Charolais bullocks sold to a top of £1230 for a pen of four from P & R Galligan, Woodford followed by £1220 for Shorthorns from R Escolme, Bay Horse. There was plenty of pens of strong bullocks selling around the £1200 mark.

Heifers sold to a top of £1290 for Angus’ from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling with other Angus heifers selling to £1230 from J Tattersall, Leyland.

Dairy bullocks saw black and whites sell to £1160 from JM & AG Swarbrick. Montbeliardes sold to £1120 from BL & D Banks, Pilling with others to the same price from LA Bradshaw, Stalmine. Fleckviehs sold to £1100 from JT & J Kelsall, Clapham.

Bulls sold to a top of £1040 for Stabilisers from AP & CE Capstick, Heversham.

Cast Cows

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a smaller entry forward selling to an overall market average of 123p/kg. Limousin cast cows sold to a top of 184.5p/kg from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor with others from the same home selling to 179.5p/kg. OTM heifers this week peaked at 181.5p/kg for Angus’ from PR Holt, Thornton Cleveleys.

The cast steer trade this week peaked at 174.5p/kg from B & J Preston, Caton with black and whites selling to 171.5p/kg from JT & U Garth, Ellel.

OTM dairy heifers sold to 161.5p/kg from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Pure Limousin cows sold to a top of 154.5p/kg or £1275 from RS & BA Harker, Holme. Dairy cows sold to 139.5p/kg from WT Whitaker & Son, Carnforth with good meated dairy cows selling around the 130p/kg mark.

Well-meated beef cows today sold between £1050 and £1150 with dairy cows selling to a top of £1002 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of calves and weanlings had a reduced entry of 59 forward. The calf trade was slightly easier as many vendors are busy with sheep sales and taking advantage of the weather. There was a good offering, once again, at Lancaster with calves to suit all buyers’ requirements and a sale well worth a visit. It was British Blue bull calves lead the way this week selling to £375 from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels. This was closely followed by British Blue bulls selling to £370 twice from RE & P Miller, Barnacre and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. British Blue bull calves averaged £296.92.

Weanling Angus bull calves sold to £365 three times from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe. All Angus bull calves averaged £327.50. The heifer calf trade peaked at £370 from AJ & AJ Gibbons for British Blues. Simmental heifers sold to £340 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with Angus heifers topping at £300 from RE & P Miller. All Angus heifer calves averaged £240 with British Blue heifers averaged £249.50 and Herefords averaged £240.

Black and white weanlings topped at £280 from RE & P Miller with black and white calves on milk selling to £135 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.
