Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Store Cattle Sale - Friday 23rd October

Calves and Weanlings
Lancaster weekly sale of calves and weanlings had another good offering of 84 forward this week. Good quality calves continue to be a strong trade with more demand for them this week. Smaller calves were an easier trade especially native heifers with a large amount of them in the market today.

The sale topped at £475 for British Blue bull calves from GJ Dugdale, Barton who sold British Blue heifers to £465. Weanling British Blues saw bulls sell to £440, £420 and £405 from G & ME Woodhouse, Ellel. British Blue heifer calves sold to £350 twice from JP & C Robson, Garstang. The native calf trade peaked at £360 for an Angus bull calf from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with Hereford bull calves to £345 and £325 from TE & M Kidd, Ellel. There were plenty of beef calves selling in the mid two hundreds to the early three hundreds.

Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £145 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with others selling to £100 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.

Store Cattle
The weekly sale of store cattle saw 300 cattle through the ring with an improved trade on the previous week, selling to increased buying power at the ring side.

Topping the trade today was a Simmental steer at £1400 from a regular Friday sale supporter EW & CR Clegg & sons of Stalmine, not far behind was JA & LP Wilson of Millom also with a Simmental steer at £1320. Angus steers topped at £1210 from H & J A Gorst, Calder Vale with another to £1170 from J M & K E Ellis, Kendal with an average of £1060 for all Angus steers.

Limousin steers topped at £1290 from J A & L R Wilson, Millom with others to £1290 from W S Burrow, Silverdale.

Charollais topped at £1110 from H J & L C Lund, Quernmore while British Blues topped at £1180 for four well fed steers from M Shepherd & Sons Pilling. Herefords today topped at £1180 from T & E Burrow Slyne, with Friesian types topping at £1190 from G R Parkinson, Whinfell with others at £1160 from J S Clarke & Sons, Catforth. Montbeliardes topped at £1110 from A & E Clarkson, Thurnham.

Store heifers today topped at £1160 with British Blues from D J & A L Sutcliffe, Winmarleigh, with other Blues to £1110 from G P Stott, Claughton on Brock. Limousin heifers topped at £1140 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. Aberdeen Angus heifers are always good to sell at Lancaster topping at £1140 from ID Bailey & Sons, Catforth.

Cull Cows
A very similar cast cow and OTM cattle trade at Lancaster today, with once again a competitive trade for all types of cattle forward. Shorthorn OTM heifers from GR & A Foy, Conder Green sold to 189.5p/kg or £1288 with British Blue heifers from the same home selling to £1283 and £1228. Other Shorthorn heifers grossed at £1250 from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday. Beef cast cows sold to a top of 159.5p/kg or £1141 for a Limousin from JE Bracken, St Michaels.

Dairy cattle saw OTM Flekvieh heifers selling to 164.5p/kg or £1047 from R Packham and Son, Docker with plenty of well fleshed heifers selling between 155p/kg and 160p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 131.5p/kg from AW & AM Park & Son, Ellel with plenty of well fleshed dairy cows selling between 125p/kg-130p/kg. There was an overall market average of 117p/kg.
