The monthly show and sale of dairy cattle at NWA saw the largest entry seen at Lancaster Auction mart for several years. In turn attracting customers from throughout the Northern Counties, Scotland, Wales and the Midlands. NWA were pleased to be able to offer potential purchasers the opportunity to bid online with successful bids on the internet securing cattle to several clients and registered interest from as far a field as Devon and Cornwall.
The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Mr Davis Wallbank, Over Wyresdale, who had a wonderful entry presented before him in the 3 show classes. After much deliberation the Championship rosette was awarded to ‘Pennine Poppy 1483’ from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with the Reserve rosette won by Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow showing ‘Bilsrow Applejax Snowboots 3’.
New Calved Heifers
Pedigree Heifers sold to a top price of £2,850, for a heifer of the renowned ‘Poppy’ family from the Pennine Herd of Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. ‘Pennine Poppy 1483’ was freshly calved mid September and giving 34 Litres. Next in the price list was ‘Wyredale Lego Aster 223’ from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore bred from an EX91 LP110 dam she sold for a final bid of £2,700. The pick of the lot from Tomlinson Bilsrow Ltd, Bilsborrow was ‘Bilsrow Applejax Snowboots 3’ giving 34 Litres having calved on 29th September at £2,620. EH & R Eccles, Brindle sold ‘Denhamhill District Daisy 2’ at £2,500 with their eye catching ‘Denhamhill Daisy Red’ bred from an EX90 dam attracting several enthusiastic admirers and selling for a final bid of £2,450. A fast trade was experienced for heifers with all sold averaging an impressive £2,213.
In-Calf Heifers
A consignment of Pedigree In-Calf Jersey Heifers from Newhouse Farming Ltd, Dumfries, all due December to a Aberdeen Angus Bull saw a top price of £1080 achieved on three occasions, others to £1050, £1020 with all sold to an average of £1003.
Youngstock
An entry of Friesian Bulling heifers from JT & U Garth, Ellel, attracted keen interest selling to £980 (19mo) with others selling to £920.
New Calved Cows
Pedigree cows saw a top price of £1950 for the 1st prize cow ‘Goadsbarrow Bryant Snowdrop’ from AV Lord & Co, Ulverston, bred from an EX94 dam and fresh into her 3rd lactation giving 44 Litres. The 2nd prize cow from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore, ‘Wyredale Endure Bendy 196’, also fresh into her 3rd lactation giving 35 litres, sold for a final bid of £1750.
A special mention must be given to Mrs Beth Ladds who showed ‘Helsington Lemonhead Lightning’ VG85, a very smart Jersey Cow fresh into her 2nd Lactation achieving £1,400.
Dispersal Sale
A feature of today’s sale was the dispersal sale of the milking and in-calf portion of the dairy herd on behalf of JK & A Bowness & Son. This genuine herd of cows attracted keen interest from a wide audience of buyers.
This sale saw a top price of £2280 achieved for a newly calved Friesian type 2nd calved cow with heifers of the same breeding selling to £2020 and £2000. A super 3rd calved cow attracted several admirers selling for a final bid of £1950. The in-calf section saw a top price of £1920 achieved for the last animal of the day, an in-calf heifer due November/ December. In-Calf heifers regularly sold at £1100-£1400. Several Jersey cows saw a top price of £1250 with others achieving £1020.
