Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Cattle - Friday 6th November 2020

Calves and Weanlings
Lancaster weekly sale of calves and weanlings had another good offering of 84 forward this week. Best quality calves continue to be in very strong demand at Lancaster and selling to a premium. Middle beef calves continue to be just as good a trade with smaller and younger types a slightly easier trade. Good types of black and whites were in short supply for what buyers wanted today.

A great consignment of British Blue bulls from J & G Thornley, Roseacre led the way selling to £530 and £490 twice. Other British Blue bulls sold to £415 from JP & C Robson, Garstang with plenty of strong Continental bull calves selling into the mid three hundreds. Continental heifer calves sold to a top of £320 for British Blues from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels. Native calves sold to a top of £390 for Angus bull calves from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe whom sold Angus heifer calves to £345 and £340.

Dairy bull calves saw Fleckviehs sell to £360 from JK & B Birkett & Son, Morecambe and black and white bull calves topped at £115 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

A selection of 20 stirks were forward today and saw Montbeliarde bullocks sell to £540 from S Ashcroft, Euxton. The consignment of bullocks from PS & H Eckersley, Mellor saw British Blues sell to £510 and Angus to £500. Heifer stirks sold to £480 for British Blues from S Ashcroft, Euxton.

Store Cattle
Lancaster once again boasted an entry of over 300 store cattle for its weekly sale. There was a strong trade for well fleshed, forward cattle with the show of cattle generally a little weathered. Store bullocks from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe led the way selling to £1450 Simmental, £1420 Limousins and £1350 for British Blues. Other Continental bullocks saw Charolais sell to £1300 from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale.

Lancaster always offers a strong trade for Native cattle with a consignment of Hereford bullocks from TJ Lloyd Farm, Settle selling to £1440, £1370 and £1280. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1300 from S Kellet and Sons, Pilling followed by others to £1240 from J Hesketh, Hutton.

The heifer trade peaked at £1190 from S Kellet and Sons, Pilling with a pair of Angus. British Blue heifers sold to £1180 from CE & MA Hewitt, Forton with a Limousin heifer from R & A Easterby, Westhouse achieving the same price.

Cull Cows
There was a bumper entry of 156 cast cows and OTM cattle forward in Lancaster today, with an overall market average of 111p/kg. The trade continues to be stronger than many local competitors with vendors urged to take advantage of the large number of buyers here. Lancaster also continues to offer a very strong trade for OTM heifers and steers, this week topping at 199.5p/kg from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with Limousin heifers. British Blue steers sold to a top of 194.5p/kg or £1254 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale whom sold Angus steers to £1238. Dairy heifers sold to 164.5p/kg from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green.

Beef cows sold to 164.5p/kg for young Herefords from TW & BH Woodhouse, Roeburndale with plenty of beef cows selling in the region of 150p/kg. Best dairy cows sold into the late 120’s p/kg numerous times. Beef cows sold to a top of £1081 for Limousins from Mason and Gardner, Chapel Le Dale. Dairy cows peaked at £1038 from WN & D Smith and Sons, Cockerham.
