Opening Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot at Lancaster top at £122.50 a Life

Prime Hoggs
There was a larger entry of 694 Prime hoggs forward, selling to a very similar market average of 225p/kg with 45-50kg hoggs averaging 230p/kg. There was a varied entry forward of hoggs in terms of quality in the market today, but leading the way, pence per kilo were Beltex hoggs from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston selling to 296p/kg or £133 with others from the same home to 282p/kg or £127. This was followed by 275p/kg or £110 from RH & C Ayrton, Over Wyresdale with KA Purtill of Wigan’s consignment selling to 274p/kg. The trade topped at £135 and £129 for heavy weight Continental hoggs from P Rossall, Claughton on Brock. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to a top of £130 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands with plenty more heavy weight hoggs selling in the one twenties. Hill bred hoggs saw 49kg Cheviots sell to £118 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe with 47kg Cheviots to £111 from T Smith, Pilling. 49kg Mules topped at £113 from PD Anderton, Scorton with Mules weighing 48kg to £110 from J Bargh and Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe, plenty more pens of Mules were selling over £100. Lonk hoggs sold to a top of £96 with the consignment of Scottish Blackface hoggs from WM Pye, Stodday selling to £95 and £94.

Cast Sheep
There were slightly less cast sheep on offer today selling to a similar trade. Charollais ewes topped the market selling to a top of £144 and £135 from PD Anderton, Scorton. Texel ewes sold to a top of £119 from J & H Huddleston, Brookhouse with Beltex ewes to £111 from KA Purtill of Wigan. Plenty of Continental ewes sold over £100 and Mule ewes peaked at £102 from T & ME Longton and Son, Quernmore.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
There was a flying trade for the opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot. The overall market average was £82.83 a life.
A busy ringside of buyers witnessed this great trade in which many more outfits are required to fulfil buyers needs. The consignment from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe saw aged Continental ewes with twin lambs at foot sell to £265, £260 and £250. Continental ewes with strong single lambs sold to £245 or £122.50 a life. The aged Mule ewes with twin Texel’s on from the same home twice sold to £222, with Mule ewes and single lambs to £165. The consignment from Mysercough College, Bilsborrow saw Suffolk ewes with young Continental twin lambs selling to £240 and £225 and Suffolk ewes and Continental singles twice selling to £220.
