Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 28th August

Store Cattle

There was a bumper entry of Store Cattle forward at Lancaster. The trade saw well-meated store cattle continue to be a good trade with, as to be expected with the current weather, a larger quantity of weathered cattle on the market with trade slightly easier for these sorts but still plenty of punters for these types of cattle. The market topped at £1410 was a British Blue steer from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe closely followed by £1400 for Charolais bullocks from R & C Parkinson, Hambleton, this beast was originally purchased out of J36 Grass Day Sale 2019. Limousin steers sold to £1370 from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton with Angus bullocks from the same home selling to £1340. Other Continental bullocks saw British Blues sell to £1350 from JM & AG Swarbrick with Charolais selling to £1330 from R & C Parkinson.

Heifers today sold to £1300 for Charolais from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man with Angus heifers peaking at £1280 from KH & D Holden & Son, Pilling. Plenty of pens of well-meated bullocks and heifers sold in excess of £1200.

Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1160 for Montbelairdes and Fleckviehs from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with Friesian bullocks this week topping at £1080 from JM & AG Swarbrick.

Cast Cows

There was a smaller entry of cast cows of 111 selling to a sharper trade at Lancaster Auction. Despite the predicted drop in dead weight price, live weight, once again, excels and is the way to market your stock. There was an overall market average of 121p/kg.

Leading the way this week was young Limousin cows selling to 184.5p/kg from D & E Whitaker, Quernmore with other Limousin cows to 167.5p/kg from SM Watson, Finsthwaite with British Blue cows selling to 167.5p/kg from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Plenty more beef cows sold around 160p/kg mark.

Cast heifers and steers topped at 164.5p/kg for black and whites from Wannops Farms Ltd, Heaton with Oxcliffe with black and white steers to the same price from GJT & V Parkinson, Preesall. Also at 164.5p/kg was OTM Continental heifers from RS & BA Harker, Carnforth.

Black and white cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield with the best dairy cows selling around the 140p/kg mark. Dairy cows peaked at £1000 a head from K, SD & JA Ward, Arkholme.

Calves & Stirks

There was an entry of 72 calves forward this week selling to a slightly sharper trade. Leading the way this week was weanlings Angus steers from AHS & A Raby, Preesall selling to £480, with others from the same home selling to £455. Closely behind this was the consignment from J & G Thornley, Roseacre selling Angus bull calves to £470, £460 and £450 with British Blues from the same home achieving £410. Plenty of beef bull calves sold between £340 and £360. Heifer calf trade this week topped at £350 twice for Charolais from WG Farms, Cockerham with British Blue heifers from DW Cottam, New Hutton achieving the same price. Plenty nice beef heifer calves sold in the early three hundreds.

Weanling bull calves sold to a top of £290 from RE & P Miller, Barnacre. Bull calves on milk sold to a top of £240 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Plenty of the best young rearing calves selling in the mid one hundreds. Bobby calves are in plenty of demand selling between £20 and £40.

The August monthly sale of stirks at Lancaster was met with mixed demand, as some buyers are cautions of the prospect of a long winter with this current weather. Stronger grazing and well-grown stirks continue to be in strong demand with younger softer cattle that have not been grazed, meeting a mixed trade. Leading the way this week was ME & J Swarbrick, Stalmine selling yearling name sire Angus bullocks to £820 and £780. This was followed by British Blue yearling bullocks selling to £725 from M & J Waller, Killington. CB Heald & Son, Ingleton sold 11-month-old Angus bullocks to £705.

The heifer trade today peaked at £700 for Herefords from PA & D Slater, Barnacre with Angus heifers selling to the same money from ME & J Swarbrick. Charolais heifers sold to a top of £680 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock.
