Store Cattle

North West Auctions Lancaster held their great annual show and sale of pens of four Continental and Native bullocks. Thanks go to our pre-sale judge Mr Frank Towers, Wray for his time and expertise who awarded the Evan Nelson trophy to S & JE Cornthwaite, Caton with a cracking pen of Limousin bullocks selling to £1200 purchased by the judge. The second prize rosette was awarded to DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland with his pen of four Limousin bullocks selling to £1210 with the 3rd prize being awarded to S & JE Cornthwaite selling to £1190. The first prize pen of native bullocks was awarded to a pen of Angus’ from RG & B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale, that went onto sell for £1090.

There was a slightly sharper trade today, however, there was a good show of cattle forward this week. Topping the market was S & JE Cornthwaite selling Limousin bullocks to £1250 with Charolais bullocks from P & R Galligan, Woodford selling to £1220 and Simmentals steers selling to £1210 from Barlow Bros, Croston, who also Limousins to £1200. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1180 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine with other Angus bullocks selling to £1170 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Heifers sold to a top of £1160 and £1140 for Bazadaises from FA Nowell & Partners, Bentham with British Blue heifers selling to £1110 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Over 30% of the cattle forward for £1100 or more.

OTM Cattle

There was an entry of 89 cast cow and OTM cattle this week, selling to an overall market average of 112p/kg. Leading the way was OTM steers selling to 169.5p/kg for Charolais from J Lamb, Old Glasson. British Blue steers achieved the pence per kilo and the top price per head £1222 from CG Birkett, Carnforth. Cast cows sold to a top of 164.5p/kg for Bazadaise from BD & PM Gill & Son, Ingleton, grossing at £1016. Stabiliser cows achieved the top price of £1024 from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens who sold other cows to £1010 and £1008. Dairy cows saw Swedish Red sell to 131.5p/kg or £1008 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with Friesian cows selling to £984 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham and £983 from J Lawson & Son, Bentham.

Calves and Stirks

There was a slightly smaller entry of calves this week at Lancaster selling to a continued strong trade, with plenty of demand. Topping the market this week at £405 was British Blue bulls from BW & J Robinson, Kirkham who sold other British Blue bulls to £375. Younger British Blue bull calves sold to £285 from J & M Sanderson, Kirkham with British Blue heifers to £275 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Charolais heifers topped at £270 from JE & S Seedall, Mellor who also sold Angus bull calves to £265 and £260.

British Friesian bull calves sold to £120 and £100 twice from A Pickthall, New Hutton with black and white bull calves from Wallbank Farms selling to £110 and £100. All black and white calves forward averaged £71.15.
