Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had another good entry of 300 cattle forward with a very similar trade to previous weeks, but still looking a decent trade especially with the current deadweight price. Topping the trade today was TC Whitside & Son, Pilling with a Charolais bullock making £1100. Also achieving the £1100 mark was an Angus bullock from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Other Angus’ from J & M Maudsley, Endmoor sold to £1090 with British Blue bullocks selling to £1080 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Plenty of short keep Continental bullocks were making £1050 plus. Well-fleshed Friesian steers from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe topped at £940 from JS Clark, Catforth.

Store heifers today from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling making £1020. Other short keep heifers were making between £900 and £950.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a slightly reduced entry of 109 forward. Despite another fall in the deadweight price, cows were still good to sell with an overall market average of 100p/kg achieved. Top price per kilo today was accomplished by a Simmental steer from J & M Cockett, Ingleton selling to 161.5p/kg. This was closely followed by a Limousin steer from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton and a British Blue steer from R Escolme, Lancaster both selling to 154.5p/kg, with LA Bradshaw, Stalmine selling a Friesian steer to 147.5p/kg. Topping the heifer section this week was Mason & Gardner, Ingleton selling a Limousin to 151.5p/kg. Other heifers sold to 144.5p/kg for a Friesian from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine, 141.5 for a Friesian from CR & A Baxter & Son, Morecambe and 139.5p/kg for a Limousin from RH & RA Baxter, Burton. Mason & Gardner also topped the cow section with a Limousin selling to 137.5p/kg. British Blue cows sold to 127.5p/kg from T & S Blades, Arkholme. A couple of bulls forward today sold to 127.5p/kg or the top price per head of £1268 for an Angus from T & P Catterall, Inskip.

Calves

The weekly sale of calves had an increased entry of 85 forward, which saw beef calves continue to be in strong demand and sell well especially under the current beef trade. Beef calves sold a top of £320 for British Blues from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale with other British Blue bulls selling to £280 twice, firstly from A Pickthall, New Hutton and AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel who also had Blue bulls to £275. Plenty of other Blue bulls sold between £240 and £260. GJ & C Billington, Garstang sold a Limousin bull to £260. Angus bull calves achieved a top price of £235 firstly from RE & P Miller, Garstang and secondly from A Pickthall. Heifer calves topped at £250 for a British Blue from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale with RT Halhead, Cockerham and A Pickthall both selling Blue heifers to £235.

Friesian bull calves topped at £70 from A Pickthall, with others selling to £68 from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal and £60 twice from WE & G Hewitt & Sons, Cockerham and Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale.
