Over 600 Cattle Forward for Lancaster’s Weekly Sale

Store Cattle

There were over 300 Store Cattle forward at Lancaster selling to a slightly sharper trade. Leading the way this week was H Birkett & Son, Overton who sold Charolais bullocks to £1220 and £1110. Simmmental bullocks sold to £1090 and £1080 from ID Bailey & Son, Catforth. British Blue bullocks topped at £1080 from J Lamb, Old Glasson. Native cattle continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster with Angus bullocks selling to £1080 from I & ME Askew, New Hutton with numerous other consignments achieving £1060. The heifer trade topped at £1040 from JD & GM Bracken, Catterall with British Blues with Limousin heifers achieving the same price from JA & LR Wilson, Millom. Dairy bullocks saw Montbeliardes sell to £920 from BL & D Banks, Pilling with Fleckviehs selling to £880 from R & K Jenkinson, Pilling and black and white bullocks sold to £820 from A & MI Robinson, Penrith.

OTM Cattle

There was a whopping entry of Cast Cows with 189 forward, but a lot of these were plain cows as to be expected this time of year especially with this trashy weather. Once again, there was plenty of buyer’s ringside with Lancaster enjoying a good trade especially in comparison to other local markets. Leading the way this week was a consignment of OTM heifers from T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton selling British Blues to 174.5p/kg or £1020. Limousin and Angus heifers sold to 164.5p/kg. Plenty more sold in excess of the 150p/kg. OTM cows topped at 159.5p/kg for Blondes from SA Hill, Slyne. Fleckvieh cows sold to 144.5p/kg from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Beef cows sold to a top price per head of £1143 for South Devons from Lucas Breeding, Adlington with Dairy cows topping at £1099 for Black and Whites from I Atkinson & Son, Warton. There was an overall market average of 96.5p/kg.

There was a larger number of stock bulls forward this week that topped at 129.5p/kg or £1230 from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Beef stock bulls were often selling around the 110p/kg mark.

Calves

The weekly sale of calves at Lancaster had an increased entry of 138 forward selling to a good trade considering how the current prime beef situation is. British Blue bull calves sold to £365 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham with others selling to £345 from T & CM Kelsall & Son, Chipping and £305 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Plenty more good quality British Blue bull calves sold in the late two hundred. Angus bull calves sold to a top of £285 and £280 from T & CM Kelsall & Son. Limousin bull calves sold to a top of £265 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Heifers sold to a top of £245 for Limousin from AD & R Milner, Claughton-on-Brock with British Blues to the same price from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Nicely bred Continental heifers selling in the early two hundred. Black and white bull calves sold to a top of £110 from T & CM Kelsall & Son and £100 from A Pickthall, with nice dark rearing types often £68 to £88. All black and white calves forward averaged £49.05.
