Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 29th March

Store Cattle

There was a slightly smaller entry of store cattle this week which sold to a sharper trade. JM & GA Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe who sold Charolais to £1300 and Angus’ to £1260. A consignment of bullocks from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet saw British Blues sell to £1160 and Limousins to £1140. Once again, plenty of bullocks selling in excess of the £1100 mark. Heifers twice sold to a top of £1100 firstly for Limousin from R & J Dodgson, Natland and then for Charolais from JT & U Garth, Ellel. Angus heifers sold to £1080 from AJ & D Knowles, New Hutton. Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1020 from Brown Swiss’ from J Lamb, Old Glasson with black and whites selling to £980 from JM & GA Swarbrick.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows and OTMs at Lancaster saw an entry of 84 forward selling to a sharper trade with all forward averaging 126p/kg. Cast Steers topped at 189.5p/kg for British Blues from JT & U Garth, Ellel with British Blue heifers selling to 187.5p/kg and 181.5p/kg from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale with Angus’ selling to 179.5p/kg from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Cast black and white steers topped at 174.5p/kg from JT & U Garth. Cows topped at 171.5p/kg for British Blues from MJ Whitworth, Bolton-le-Sands. Plenty of beef cows sold in the 140p/kg range. Black and white cows topped at 157.5p/kg from J & M Robinson, Over Kellet. Plenty of dairy cows easily sold in the one hundred and twenties pence per kilo. Top price per head in the cast ring was British Blue heifers selling to £1162 closely followed by JS & S Atkinson selling Angus’ to £1129. Cows topped at £1080 for British Blues from MJ Whitworth with black and whites topping at £1077 from T Taylor, Wood Plumpton. Vendors are urged to take advantage of strong trade for cast cows in the ring at the moment especially at Lancaster offering buys ring of buyers.

Calves and Stirks

The monthly sale of stirks had an entry of 169 forward there was a strong trade for good quality bred stirks of all ages with harder done to and plainer types a more selective trade. Well-gown bullocks regularly selling in excess of the £700 mark. Topping the trade today was E Lund & Son, Ingleton selling Hereford bullocks to £750 this was closely followed by Angus’ from J Maxwell, Halton selling to £740. Limousin steers sold to £720 and £700 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Plenty more bullocks easily sold in to the mid six hundreds. Leading the way in the heifer section was J Maxwell, selling Angus’ to £600 with Herefords selling to £560. Topping the bull section was J & CW Metcalfe & Son, Quernmore selling 5 and half month old British Blues to £515 with Herefords selling to £510. Black and white bullocks topped at £420 from I Atkinson & Son, Wharton. This was closely followed by 6 months old Friesian selling to £400 from J & C Metcalfe, Quernmore.

Once again, Calves in Lancaster were met with plenty of demand with British Blue bull calves selling to £365 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel who also sold Blue bulls to £345. Simmental bull calves sold to £355 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Also selling in excess of the £300 mark was British Blue bulls from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet achieving £340. All British blue bulls sold to a market average of £315.83. Limousin bull calves sold to £315 from DJ Townley, Stodday. The heifers were topped at £300 for Simmentals from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green. Plenty of beef calves sold in the mid to late two hundreds. Black and white bull calves sold around the £100 mark with all black and white bull calves averaging £78.
