Store Cattle

A similar trade for Store Cattle with more numbers forward this week. Leading the way was MS Dugdale & Sons, Tewitfield selling Limousin bullocks to £1380 and British Blue bullocks to £1340. This was closely followed by Limousin bullocks selling to £1260 and £1240 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Barlow Bros of Croston sold Limousin bullocks to £1230 with other Limousin bullocks selling to £1210 from FA Nowell & Partners, Bentham. Native cattle continue to be in strong demand at Lancaster with a pen of 4 Angus bullocks selling to £1200 from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. Heifers topped at £1180 for British Blues from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton, with Simmental heifers selling to £1160 from R Escolme, Bay Horse. Native heifers topped at £1160 for Angus’ from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. 25% of the cattle sold for £1100 or more.

Dairy bullocks sold to a top of £1080 from Meuse Rhine Issel from Barlow Brow, with black and white bullocks topping at £940, twice from M & PE Higginson, Pilling and H Hesketh & Son, Longton. Other black and white bullocks sold to £900 from W & A Cornall, Barnacre.

OTM Cattle

There was an increased entry of OTMs with an entry of 90 forward selling to a sharper trade for all types of cows. Leading the way this week was Limousin heifers from DJ Clarke Farming Ltd, Barnacre selling to 164.5p/kg with British Blue bullocks from the same home achieving the same price. OTM dairy heifers saw Ayrshires sell to 159.5p/kg from D & K Howarth, Hambleton. Beef cows topped at 159.5p/kg three times for Bazadaise from EW & A Bradshaw, Stalmine and Limousins from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead ahnd EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe. Plenty of well-fleshed beef cows sold around the 150p/kg mark. Top price beef cow per head was a Hereford from EW & A Bradshaw selling to £1220 with Limousin cows selling to £1156 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Black and whites sold to a top of 151.5p/kg from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with top price dairy cow per head £1009 from MJ Fell, Whittington. Plenty of black and white cows this week sold in the mid to late 120p/kg.

There was an overall market average of 119.5p/kg and all black and white forward averaging 110p/kg.

Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 66 forward the entry was mainly made up by beef calves. Leading the way today was British Blue bulls selling to £390 from J & A Sheerin, Quernmore. This was closely followed by British Blue bulls selling to £350 a one month and one day old from Drinkall Brothers, Over Wyresdale with all forward averaging £319.17. Angus bull calves topped at £345 and £340 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with others from the same good home selling to £325. Limousin bull calves sold to a top of £320, twice from JM & MH France & Son, Littledale and from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Plenty of beef bull calves sold around the £300 mark today. Heifers sold to a top of £325 for British Blues from W Crook, Out Rawcliffe with Limousin heifers from the same home selling to £265. GCL Stephenson sold Limousin heifers to £260. Plenty of beef Limousin heifer calves sold in the mid two hundreds. Angus heifer calves topped at £190 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons. Black and white calves sold to a top of £80 three times from Drinkall Brothers. All black and white calves have averaged £69.29.

A selection of stirks forward this week saw Simmental, Angus and British Blue steers top at £400.
