Store Cattle

There was a slightly smaller entry of Store Cattle this week which saw a very mixed show forward. Younger types of cattle were a decent trade and good to sell, but any not in specification were a bit less on the week and harder to place. Angus’ dominated the bullock and heifer trade today with bullocks selling to £1350 from J Hesketh, Preston, £1300 from S Kellet & Sons, Pilling and £1280 from R & E Ladds, Kendal, with heifers topping at £1140 from V & EJ Chadwick, Sowerby. Limousin bullocks sold to a top of £1240 from S Kellet & Sons closely followed by JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe selling Limousins to £1200. £1180 was achieved numerous times for bullocks today, firstly from S Kellet & Sons with Montbeliardes and secondly from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth with Angus’. British Blue bullocks achieved £1170 twice, firstly from R & E Ladds and then from KG & LM Park, Witherslack. Hereford heifers sold to £1140 from J Hesketh with AT Burrow & Son, Hornby selling Limousin heifers to £1110. Friesians this week sold to £1060 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel.

OTM Cattle

There was a larger entry of 99 Cast Cows forward today selling to a slightly sharper trade with an average of 119p/kg achieved for all forward. Topping the trade today was a Limousin heifer from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton selling to 175.5p/kg. Cast Cows sold to a top of 149.5p/kg today for an Angus from GR & A Foy, Conder Green, who also sold British Blue cows to 139.5p/kg. Limousin cows sold to 139.5p/kg from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with DH & M Kellet & Sons, Thurnham selling a Hereford to the same price. Top price per head today was £1151 for a Hereford cow from JR & A Thornton, Winmarleigh. A few cast steers today saw Cardwell Farms, Esprick top the market at 161.5p/kg for a British Blues with K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel selling an Angus to 159.5p/kg or £1116.

Black and whites today saw a Friesian heifer from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton sell to 159.5p/kg and AT Burrow & Son, Hornby sell a heifer to 151.5p/kg. Top grossing Friesian today was from JR & A Thornton selling to £1038.

Calves and Stirks

There was a larger entry of calves forward this week which sold to a top price of £365 for a super Welsh Black bull from WM & D Smith, Cockerham who also sold others to £340. Well done Montbeliardes sold to £252 for a 3 week old bull from Colby Farms Ltd. A run of young Herefords from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green topped at £222 for bulls. Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale had their usual quality calves on offer today topping at £220 for a Hereford bull with heifers selling to £200. British Blue bulls topped at £350 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

There were just a handful of stirks on offer today following on from the monthly sale last week. Selling to a top of £445 was a British Blue bull from WG & RG Riley, Chorley with heifers from the same home selling to £335. Angus heifer stirks sold to a top of £350 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel with others at £300.

More calves are required for next week to satisfy buyer’s demands.
