Prime Lambs top at £100 at Lancaster


Prime Lambs


The weekly sale of Prime Lambs at Lancaster had an increased entry of 612 forward, selling to an increased trade of 183p/kg. Once again heavy weight and light weight lambs were in strongest demand with plenty of interest in best confirmation lambs. Lambs weighing in excess of 45kg averaged 191p/kg. Leading the way this week was 48kg Texel lambs from George Newsham of Galgate selling to £100 and purchased by Denneys Butchers, Lyth Valley. This was followed by heavy weight Suffolk lambs selling to £98 from DM Eames of Abbeystead. Beltex lambs sold to £95 for 47kg lambs from BR & S Carter of Pilling. A consignment of Texel lambs from R Collinge and Son of Kirkham topped at £95 with other Texel’s selling to £94 from Steph Cowgill of Bentham. J & R Waller of Killington sold two pens of Suffolk lambs to £91. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 215p/kg from S Wilson & Son of Scotforth, purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers of Lancaster. Better confirmation lambs sold in excess of 200p/kg.


Cast Sheep


The cast sheep numbers at Lancaster continue to grow with 170 forward this week, meeting with plenty of demand from a busy ring of buyers. The trade topped at £94 for Texel ewes from R Standen of Daisy Bank, closely followed by Elsie Hartley of Hornby selling to £90 with her Texel ewes. Plenty of pens of Continental ewes sold into the eighties. Mule ewes topped at £83 from S Wilson & Son of Scotforth with plenty of big Mule ewes selling around the £80 mark. Horned sheep topped at £55 for Dalesbreds from T & D Wright of Roeburndale East with Swaledales to £54 from RH & C Ayrton of Abbeystead and S Park of Aughton.
A selection of goats were on offer today selling to £69 and £66 from SE Peacock of Cockerham.
