Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 5th July

Store Cattle

There was a larger catalogued entry of 200 Store Cattle at Lancaster today which saw a good entry of well-fleshed and good conformation cattle selling well considering the current deadweight prices with strong demand for younger cattle as many have plenty of grass and getting good yields of crop. The market today was topped by TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe selling a pen of Charolais bullocks to £1240. A consignment of cattle from JA & LR Wilson, Millom saw Simmental bullocks sell to £1200 with Limousin heifers achieving the same price. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1190 twice from J & H Davis, Cabus and T Robson & Son, Singleton. Nearly 20% of the cattle forward today sold in excess of £1100 mark. Black and whites sold to a top of £950 from T Robson & Son. All bullocks in the auction today sold to a market average of £1012.

OTM Cattle

There was an increased entry of 92 Cast Cows forward today that saw all types sell to a sharper trade of an overall market average of 125p/kg. More cows are required each week to fulfil the strong requirements we have from our buyers. Young South Devon cows sold to a top of 189.5p/kg or £1155 from Lucas Breeding, Adlington. This was closely followed by a young Angus cow selling to 179.5p/kg from FE & CM Robinson, Crooklands. Cast steers sold to a top of 179.5p/kg for British Blues from JD, EM & JA Atkinson, Kendal closely followed by Angus’ selling to 174.5p/kg from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. OTM black and white heifers sold to a top of 157.5p/kg from RW Bainbridge & Son, Whittington with young dairy cows from the same selling to 151.5p/kg. Plenty of black and white cows sold between 125-130p/kg. Beef cows sold to a top of £1203 for Angus’ from A & P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Black and white cows topped at £1072 from Bradleys Farm, Preesall with others to £1044 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham and £1039 from Richmond Hall, Cockerham.

Calves and Stirks

There was a larger entry of calves on the market today of 63 in which more are needed to fulfil the strong demand of our busy ring of buyers at Lancaster. Numerous best beef cows sold in excess of the £400 mark. British Blue bull calves from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel sold to £415 and J & G Thornley, Roseacre sold British Blue bulls to £410. A consignment of calves from V & EJ Chadwick & Son, Sowerby saw Limousin bull calves sell to £405 and British Blue bull calves to £400. Plenty more good quality Continental beef bull calves sell in excess of £350 with all British blue bull calves forward averaging £350.42. Continental heifer calves sold to a top of £340 for British Blues from J & G Thornley, with all British Blue heifer calves averaging £302.50. Angus bull calves sold to £325 and £310 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Native heifer calves saw Angus’ sell to £300 and £285 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons. Black and white bull calves topped £170 for weanlings from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, with other black and whites selling to £138 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, £122 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. All black and white calves forward average £89.
