Lancaster Livestock Auction: Primestock & Opening Store Lambs - Monday 5th August

Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of Prime Lambs had an increased entry of 739 selling to a market average o 177p/kg with over 20% of the entry forward being Mules and Mashams. Leading the way this week was Beltex lambs selling to £94 from GR Newsham, Galgate. Texel lambs twice sold to a top of £91 from WM Pye, Ashton with Stodday and E Lund & Son, Ingleton. Suffolk lambs also topped at £91 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham. Plenty of pens of lambs sold easily into the mid-eighties. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 217p/kg or £89 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham purchased by Gregory Williams Butchers with other Beltex lambs to 211p/kg from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Plenty of pens of better conformation lambs sold either side of the 200p/kg. Upland lambs saw horned lambs sell to £75 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Mules selling to £74.50 from WM Pye with other Mules selling to £73 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead and B & SE Carter, Ellel. Once again, lightweight lambs were in plenty of demand.

Cast Sheep

Strong and fit Cast Ewes continue to be a good trade with small thin sheep hard to place. Topping the market today was ewes from JA Lambert, Out Rawcliffe selling to £105. Texel cast tups sold to £100 and £95 from James Burr, Quernmore. Zwartbles sold to a top of £83 from R & DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with Leicester ewes achieving the same price from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Mule ewes sold to a top of £81 from HJ & BE Kelsall, Gressingham with plenty of strong Mule ewes selling in the early seventies. Cheviot Ewes sold to a top of £76 from KA Purtill, Wigan. Fit horned sheep sold well today topping at £56 for Swaledales from JR & J Gorst, Quernmore with Swaledale ewes selling to £52 and £51 from PM & ST Entwistle, Abbeystead.

Store Lambs

Lancaster’s opening sale of Store Lambs of the season saw plenty of interest ringside with buyers and vendors deeming the new sale day and time a success. The trade today was topped at £67 for Beltex Lambs from D & DW Prickett, Farleton. Texel lambs sold to a top of £63.50 from B & J Preston, Caton with Mules selling to £60 and £56 from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead. Horned lambs saw Lonks sell to £48 from Messrs Hey & Sons, Quernmore.
