Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 2nd August

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had an entry of 215 forward which saw all classes of Store Cattle in specification a sharper trade. The trade topped at £1290 for an Aberdeen Angus bullock from JH Woof & Son, Kendal, with other Angus’ sold to £1250 from GF & EE Holt, Chipping. Limousin Bullocks sold to a top of £1260 from W Garnett & Sons, Milnthorpe. J Prest & Son, Bay Horse sold Simmentals to £1210 with Charolais selling to £1200 from Cowell & Moor Woodplumpton. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £1160 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling.

The heifer trade was also topped by Angus’ selling to £1170 from EW & CR Clegg & Sons, Stalmine, with other Angus’ from the same home selling to £1140. British Blue heifers sold to £1080 from TJ Parkinson, Preston and a run of Limousin heifers from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham sold to £1080.

Montbeliardes and Friesians both topped at £960 from TJ Parkinson and L Parsons & Sons, Levens.

OTM Cattle

There was an increased entry of 108 Cast Cows this week which sold to a good trade throughout. The cull ring was topped at 159.5p/kg for a Limousin heifer from L Atkinson, Kendal. Friesian heifers sold to 154.5p/kg from RG & B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale and Simmental heifers sold to 151.5p/kg from JE Harrison, Forton. Cows topped at 154.5p/kg several times today. Firstly for a Blonde from JE Harrison and then for Limousins from JE & AC Clarke, Melling and T & M Halhead, Carnforth. Shorthorn cows sold to 141.5p/kg from JL & LM Clarke, Tunstall. Top grossing cow this week was a Hereford from GJT & V Parkinson, Preesall selling to £1401 followed by an Angus from JE & AC Clarke, selling to £1225.

Cast Steers today sold to 147.5p/kg for a Friesian from WS Burrow & Sons, Carnforth with Cowell & Moore, Woodplumpton selling a Friesian steer to 139.5p/kg. A handful of Cast Bulls today sold to 129.5p/kg or £1116 for a Limousin from WI & AM Atkinson, Bleasdale.

There was an overall market average of 117p/kg.

Calves

There were more calves on offer this week with 73 on offer however buyers were more selective. Well-bred and well-shown calves were still a sharp trade and were well sold but smaller and younger sorts were harder to place. The calf trade was topped at £305 for a British Blue bull from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. This was closely followed by other British Blue bulls from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel selling to £285 three times. Angus bulls sold to £260 from J & H Thornley, Kirkham with H & VE Jolly, Preston selling Angus’ to £250.

Heifers topped at £300 for a British Blue from J & G Thornley who sold others to £275 and £265. Angus heifers sold to £180 from H & VE Jolly, Preston and Mason, Birkland Barrow sold Herefords to £175.

Black and white bull calves topped at £115 from C & J Smith, St Michaels.
