Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 21st September

Store Cattle

There was a bumper entry of just short of 500 Store Cattle this week at Lancaster, which included the annual autumn show of pens of four bullocks. Our thanks must go to Mr R Owen, for judging today. The first prize was awarded to S & JE Cornthwaite, Brookhouse with Limousins, they were also awarded the 2nd Prize Rosette for Limousins as well. Topping the trade today was the winning pen selling to £1460 with the second prize pen selling to £1380. Also breaking the £1400 barrier was Angus Bullocks from IG Haworth, Pilling selling to £1440 with Charollais from L Goodier & Son, Lea. Thirty one bullocks sold for £1300 or more. The trade today saw well-fleshed and short keep cattle easily sold and in strong demand, with vendors with these types of cattle leaving the sale well pleased.

Heifers sold to a top of £1320 for Angus’ from R & DM Rossall & Son, Pilling. Bulls sold to a top of £1230 for British Blues from J & H Bland & Son, Levens. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £960 from EW & CR Clegg & Son.

All bullocks forward today averaged £1021.

OTM Cattle

It was great to have over 160 Cast Cows at Lancaster today, with there being a very back end show of cattle as many people start to off load cows in preparation for lining time. Well-fleshed cows continue to be good to sell, with a large number of leaner cows on the market today leading to an overall slightly less market average of 107p/kg. Lancaster continues to have a good strong ring of buyers for OT M Heifers and Steers with these topping at 184.5p/kg from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with a British Blue Heifer, others sold between 160p/kg and 170p/kg. Black and whites sold to a top of 159.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Beef cows topped 147.5p/kg for British Blue from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Once again, plenty of cattle grossing over the £1000 mark, topping at £1204 for an Angus Bull from J & M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor. This was closely followed by Simmental Bulls at £1185 from SI Porter, Flookburgh.

Friesian cows topped at £1107 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel.

Calves and Stirks

The weekly sale of calves at Lancster had a reduced entry forward this week, in which more Beef calves could have easily of been sold. Trade sold to a top of £375 and £350 for British Blue Bulls from G & ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Native calves continue to be sticky to sell with young Angus bull calves selling to £190 from JE & J Pye & Son, Quernmore.

Black and white bull calves topped at £95 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.
