Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had an entry of 451 forward for the sale. There was a typical show of cattle for the time of year with nearly too many on the market for buyers requirements; however well-finished cattle sold to a premium. Buyers are also requesting better batching of cattle, preferably in larger lots.

Topping the trade today was DW & NM Alderson, Sedbergh selling Angus Bullocks to £1350. This was closely followed by T & M Halhead, Priest Hutton selling Angus bullocks to £1330. Limousin bullocks this week sold to £1290 from M & R Stirzaker, Milnthorpe, Simmentals sold to £1300 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale who also sold British Blues to £1280. Heifers sold to a top of £1320 for a Limousin from Barlow Brothers of Preston.

Black and white bullocks this week sold to a top of £1120 from TW Nelson & Son, Cockrigg Farm followed by R & A Jolleys, Cabus selling to £1020.

Please can we remind vendors that any cattle that arrive after the sale has started that they will sold at the end of the sale and to make sure that all cattle are correctly tagged, before they arrive to the market.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of OTM Cattle had an entry of 123 forward which saw an average show of cattle but prices very comparable with other local centres with an overall market average of 100p/kg. A 43 month old Limousin Cow from TE, JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow topped the trade today selling to 169.5p/kg. Top price per head today was £1120 for a Limousin Bull from RH, M & S Boyren, Lowick. OTM Heifers this week sold to 154.5p/kg for an Angus from R Oldfield, Yealand Redmayne.

Calves and Stirks

An entry of younger calves were forward this week with a shortage of beef calves. Aberdeen Angus x bulls from JE & J Pye & Son sold to £172 with Hereford x bulls from TM Townley selling to £152. Heifers were generally selling to £115 to £145 for Aberdeen Angus x. Several reared British Blue x Bulls sold to £295 and £275 from AW & AM Park & Sons.

Dairy bulls sold to £60 from J Bargh & Son with others selling between £45 and £55. Smaller claves were harder to sell as there are plenty of them on the market currently.
