J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Show & Sale of Suckler Cattle - Thursday 4th October

Suckled Calves

The first show and sale of suckled calves attracted a large crowd of local and distant buyers all keen to secure replacement stock from this renowned sale.

The show was kindly sponsored by CT Hayton Ltd, Kendal and ably judged by Miss Fiona Jowett. The Championship rosette was awarded to an 8 month old Limousin x British Blue Heifer from M & D Hatton, Broughton-in-Furness, which latter sold for £1000 to the judge. Reserve Champion was the first prized steer from TW Gorst, Crook, which sold for £900 to P & E Fox. The first prized native sired suckler calf was an Aberdeen Angus x heifer from J & M Wilson, Selside achieving £710.

A buoyant trade was experienced for all classes and types of calves with vendors leaving pleased with prices achieved ahead of expectations. Well-grown steers regularly selling between £750 and £850, with smaller younger well-bred sorts £700 to £750. All steers sold to an average of £710 to include a large proportion at 4-5 months old. Heifers nicely selling at £650 to £750, with young sorts £500 to £580. All heifers sold averaged £630.

Several young bulls forward and easily sold topped at £850 for Blonde x from MW & MR Black with younger 5 month old bulls selling between £680 and £740, all sold averaged £640.

The second sale of suckler calves will be on Thursday 1st November.

Store Cattle

Store cattle concluded the sale and were eagerly bid for with vendors leaving pleased with prices achieved. Top priced steer was a 14 month old from Charolais x from P & SA Edmondson achieving £990 with stabiliser steers selling to £970 from A Dixon & Son. Heifers sold to £880 for 16 month old Angus’ from MJ & JD Handley, with others at £850. Younger Limousin x sold to £800 from J Kitching & Son.

The next sale of cattle is on Thursday 18th October with buyers requesting more cattle.

Beef Breeding Cattle

The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle saw an entry of predominantly older cows with younger calves forward. British Blue and Limousin x cows with Hereford calves from GM Redmayne, Ings sold to £1050 with others generally £950 to £1000. Angus and Hereford x cows with Angus x calves sold to £800. Several in-calf Red Poll cows due February/March, to a Red Poll bull, sold to £780 with others £750.

A Hereford Bull achieved a final bid of £1000 and a pair of Limousin x bulling heifers from EJ Hodgson & Son sold for a final bid of £900.

Cast Cows

Cull Cows are now coming forward in greater numbers as farmers look ahead to winter housing. Well-fleshed heavy cows were in strongest demand and falling short of buyers requirements. Beef Bred cows sold to 119p/kg from RM & PM Simpson, with others selling between 110p/kg to 118p/kg for further finishing.

Dairy cows sold to 114p/kg from HW Richardson & Son, mediums sold between 98p/kg to 105p/kg with leanest parlour cows less.

Top grossing price of the day £851 from O & JR Dixon, several OTM Dairy heifers forward selling to 149p/kg from JW Hargreaves and £756 from HW Robinson & Son.

Rearing Calves

The sale of rearing calves saw 69 forward with young beef bull calves selling to £250 for British Blue x from JK & A Bowness & Son with others £190 to £240, which included Herefords at £210. Beef heifers sold to £230 for British Blue x from DW Cottam, with younger heifers at £140 - £180.

An abundance of young dairy bulls saw a selective trade with mediums generally £40 to £45. Fleckvieh bull calves sold to £72. Several Holstein Friesian bull stirks sold to £240.
