Spring Lambs
There was a larger entry of over 800 prime lambs forward this week, with the trade improving all of last week. The sale was met by a busy ring of buyers this morning, with a couple of fresh faces in attendance. There was an overall market average of 183p/kg. Well-fleshed and fed lambs continue to draw a premium with vendors urged to ensure lambs are finished before marketing.
The trade topped at £107 for heavy weight Texel lambs from C & B Lowther of Over Wyresdale with others to £102 from the same home. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £103 for heavy weight Suffolks from DM Eames of Abbeystead. Better types of Texel and Beltex lambs sold in and around the 200p/kg mark, selling to a top of 218p/kg from TR Prickett of Hutton Roof with Beltex lambs. Charollais lambs sold to 207p/kg from AG Butler of Hambleton. There was more Mules on offer today selling to a top of £72.50 from S Park of Aughton with Mules averaging 170p/kg.
Cast Sheep
There was a similar number of cast sheep on offer with big well-fleshed ewes good to sell and leaner types harder to place, as seen in markets over the previous week. Texel ewes sold to a top of £85 from WM Pye of Ashton with Stodday, with Mule ewes from the same home selling to £74. Strong Mule ewes regularly sold around the seventy pound mark. Horned ewes sold to a top of £65 from S Crawford of Halton.
Prime Beef
