The monthly sale of Dairy had a smaller entry forward for the sale but there certainly was plenty of interest with many fresh purchasers as well as returning buyers from throughout the Northern counties.
The pre-sale show saw an impressive line-up of heifers put before for the Judge Aubrey Greenhalgh of Great Eccleston to cast his expert eye over. The champion rosette was awarded to lot 1 a much-admired heifer from AB & J Parkinson & Sons of Liscabank, Out Rawcliffe with Liscabank Asterix Lead giving 38 litres which was met by some strong bidding selling to £2,350. The first heifer in the ring from H Wright and Son of Berryholme, Kendal set the trade off from selling a heifer to £2,350 for Berryholme Contrast Jean. The reserve champion Samlea Pesky Camilla from JJ & G Eastham, Walmsley Fold, Preston sold to £2,180, this being part of the first prize pair of heifers with Samelea McCutchen Ilsa with a PLI+309 selling to £1,900. All heifers in milk sold to a market average of £1767.
There was just a couple of cows forward in the market meeting strong trade, both from AB & J Parkinson & Sons of Liscabank, Out Rawcliffe with a second calver selling to £1,620 and a third calver that had won the pre-sale show cow class selling to £1,700.
A special entry of in-calf heifers from JH Towers of Tunstall Hall, Carnforth were met by plenty of interest from regular and new customers. All heifers where pedigree and due to calve in the next month to six weeks sold to a top of £1,450, twice, with both in-calf to the beef bull. Pedigree heifer’s in-calf to the sex semen sold to £1,400 from the same home. In calf heifers sold to a market average of £1293.
