J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Additional Sale of Calves, Followed by the Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs, Thursday 19th December 2024.

CALVES

The additional sale of calves today saw all goods sell to their full potential. Aberdeen Angus cross bull calves from W&S Airey, Whittington lead the way reaching £420, with a very sweet one month old British Blue heifer from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg next at £415. Younger calves sold to £380 for British Blue bulls from HJ Robinson, Preston Patrick and £260 for a twenty day old Aberdeen Angus from Colby Farms, Appleby. Dairy bulls hit £160 and £155 from AE & MK Hayhurst, Natland.

STORE LAMBS

The concluding sale of store lambs saw all classes and types presented for sale, with buyers competing for every lot, with an overall market average of £100.20 achieved. The best continental lambs sold to a top of £145 for ¾ Beltex from R Allen, Staveley. Other strongest pens of well-drawn lambs sold to £137 for Suffolks from J&R Bell, Crook, Texel to £132 from C Head, Kendal with others £131 from A Barnes, Haversham and £129 from JA&KJ Allen, Ings. Other stronger end pens were £112 to £121, mediums keep £99 to £108, with only the smallest long-term lambs £75 to £88. Mules sold to a top of £117 from JF&SW Sutton, Longsleddale with other stronger pens £102 to £110, with medium £91 to £98. Other hill bed lambs saw Cheviots to £116 from TLB&J Knowles, Selside with others at £103 form Shuttleworth & Brown, Sedbergh. Charollais cross Herdwicks sold to £99 for a ring full from A Knowles, Broughton in Furness with Swaledale’s to £94 from Clegg & Bennet, Seathwaitee. Rough Fells sold to £88 and Herdwicks to £69.
The next sale of store lambs is on Thursday 2nd January, with keen buyer interest already experienced. Vendors are encouraged to enter sheep with confidence, please note catalogue entries close on Monday 23rd December.
