CALVES & WEANLINGS

139 rearing calves sold to another fast and competitive trade, with all vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved and many commenting ahead of other earlier sales in the week.
Bull calves sold to a top price of £560 on two occasions for Charolais cross from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor and a British Blue cross from W&S Airey, Whittingham. Other strong bull calves included British Blue cross at £500 from A Pickthall, New Hutton, Aberdeen Angus cross at £485 from Langley Park Farms, Millom and Limousin cross £455 from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Young three week old British Blue bulls sold to £450 from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg with others at £440 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Dairy bulls sold to a top price of £185 for a dairy Shorthorn from Messrs Robinson, Strickley with Holstein Friesians selling to £180 from RJ&K Wilkinson, Levens and £170 from Messrs Wilson, Grange Over Sands. Young dairy bulls were generally £65 to £100, depending on quality and type.
Heifer calves sold to £490 for a British Blue cross from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme with others at £440, £420 and £410 from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Stronger heifer calves attracted a keen interest as suckler replacements. Younger British Blue cross sold to £400 from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with Limousin cross to £390 from Bambers Farm Ltd, Cockerham and Aberdeen Angus cross to £360 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Younger heifer calves were generally £210 to £270, with only the very smallest less.

STIRKS

38 stirks saw Charolais cross bulls sell to £870 from J&A Smales, Clapham with Aberdeen Angus cross steers selling to £800 from J&R Waller, Killington and others at £720 from JJ&MA Park & Son, Helsington.
Heifer stirks sold to £660 for British Blue cross from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack. Younger recently weaned calves saw British Blue cross bulls at 4 months old sell to £620 from JR Robinson & Son, Nook. Others at £600 from W Stamper, Chipping who sold British Blue cross heifers at £450.

STORE CATTLE

Store cattle saw a top price of £1400 achieved for a Shorthorn cross steer from M Robinson, Stainton with Limousin cross selling to £1370 from JA Airey, Old Hutton, Aberdeen Angus cross £1360 from G Cuthbertson, New Hutton and British Blue cross to £1220 from M Bateman & Son, Sedbergh. Yearling steers sold to £1210 for a Charolais cross from R&EA Gardner, Briggsteer with Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1040 from J Stott, Crosscrake and another Aberdeen Angus cross £1020 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. Galloway cross steers from RJ Stott, Stainton sold at £1040 with Blue Albions from the National Trust Windermere selling at £1000.
Heifers sold to £1150 for a Limousin cross from Langley Park Farms, Millom with others at £1030 from D&P Johnston, Dalton in Furness. Shorthorns achieving £1010 from R &EA Gardner, Briggsteer and Hereford cross £980 form RJ Stalker, Ulverston. Younger heifers were generally £880 to £950.
Store bulls sold to £1400 for Limousin cross from PW Clarke, Crossthwaite with others at £1240 from JA Airey, New Hutton and British Blue cross to £1120 from M Eastham, Dalton.

The second prize show and sale of suckled calves saw another high quality entry, continue to attract new customers from far and wide, all keen to secure stock from this renewed sale centre. The pre sale show was kindly judged by Mr D Carr, Hexham who award the prizes as followed:

Blonde cross sold to £1300 from MJ Whitworth, Bolton Le Sands and Limousin cross selling to £1280 from D&A Nicholson, Subberthwaite with others at £1210 from J Holmes & Son, Ulverston, £1200 Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans, £1140 from CI Briggs, Ambleside with Charolais cross to £1130 from AG&MA Clarke, Cartmel Fell, Limousin cross achieving £1100 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel and Charolais cross also £1100 from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness. Younger steers (5 month old) sold to £960 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans and £940 from W Atkinson & Son, Crook with others regularly £820 to £900.
Heifers sold to a top price of £1520 for a Limousin cross heifer from B Wilson & sons, Selside with Blonde cross selling to £1250 form MJ Whitworth Bolton Le Sands. Limousin cross sold to £1100 from Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans, £1070 form AG Riley, Nether Kellet, £1020 from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell and £1000 from AG&ME Clarke, Cartmel Fell. Other well bred heifers were regularly £950 to £1000. Younger heifers (6 month old) sold to £950 for British Blue cross from CD Sliger & LJ Heaton, Sedbergh who also sold Limousin cross at £940, other younger heifers were regularly £780 to £850.
Suckler bulls sold to £1230 for a pen of Charolais cross from WA Atkinson, Colton with Brtish Blue selling to £1160 from W Heaps Ltd, Charnock. Limousin cross sold to £1070 from B Heys, Wigan and JA Barnes, Whinfell. Aberdeen Angus cross sold to £1000 for EA&E Lund & Son, Nether Kellet.

CULL / OTM CATTLE

Another increase on numbers with 107 forward selling to an overall market average of 141ppk, with over 70 of the entry being dairy cows.
The sale peaked at 209.5ppk for a Limousin cross cow from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton In Furness with others at195.4p/kg from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere and 184.5ppk from F & JM Mason, Mansergh. Other meated beef cows were 165-184ppk with medium & leaner sorts 135-155ppk.
Top grossing was a Limousin cross from R & BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness, totalling £1485 with others at £1478 from B Heyes, Mossborough and £1472 for a British Blue cross from PG & PD Aiery, Cartmel.
Dairy cows sold to 177.5ppk for a British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton In Furness, with other heavy & well fleshed dairy cows 150-168ppk with medium and leaner cows 120-145ppk, with several very lean and smaller less.
Top grossing dairy cow was £1453 from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness.
OTM beef heifers sold to 211.5ppk & £1334 for a British Blue cross heifer from I & AJ Armer, Burneside. Dairy heifers sold to 181ppk from Jenkin Crag Farm, Kendal with others to £1130 from RJ & VR Wilson & son, Levens.
Cull bulls sold to 144ppk & £1037.
