J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 29th August 2023.

PRIME LAMBS

As seen nationally, well meated lambs continue to sell a premium with other less finished lambs meeting less demand with some looking better suited for the store lamb market, an overall market average was achieved of 251p/kg with 1400 sold.
• Texels sold to £156 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe
• Beltexs to £150 from R Braithwaite, Low Bentham
• Suffolks to £146 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland
• Charollais to £144 from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow
• Dutch Spotted to £127 from C & B Haslam, Grange over Sands
• Lleyns to £124 from E Dodgson, Kendal
• Dorset to £144 from S Proctor, Selside

North West Auctions were proud to host Belting Beltex, kindly supported by the North West Beltex Club.

The rosettes were awarded as follows:
1st R Braithwaite with 2 Beltex weighing 43kg selling to £150
2nd MA & JA Winn with 2 Beltex weighing 45kg selling to £135
3rd PJ & ES Rogerson with 2 Beltex weighing 42kg selling to £130

CAST SHEEP

611 local farmer ewes forward with a large proportion of the sale being lighter weight hill ewes as to be expected for this time of year. The heavy best ewes were in short supply selling to a top of £161 for a Texel x from HR & HV Knowles, Docker with other at £145 for Texel x from PJ & SE Rogerson, Appleby and £144 from A & B Fell, Millom. Others generally selling £130-£140. Heavy mules sold to £123 from M & M Carr, Carnforth with others at £119 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale and £115 from DJ Thompson, Old Hutton. Other stronger pens of Mules generally £100-110, medium types £88-£100 with the keenest interest in those suitable for further feeding which were generally £75-£85. Hill bred ewes sold to £92 for Rough Fells from S Crawford, Staveley with Lleyns selling to £86 from JA & R Geldard & Sons, Levens. Cheviot to £83 from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. Swaledales to £71 from ST & SE Allen, Tebay. Swaledales saw the stronger end from £55-£65 with medium types £38-£50 with the smallest and leanest generally £25-£35.
Cull rams sold to £190 for Charollais from JA & A Geldard & Sons, Levens who sold others at £170. Medium texels selling to £130 from Braestead Farms, Patterdale with others generally £110-£125.
