J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM and Store Cattle, Thursday 29th August 2022.

Calves & Weanlings
90 calves forward with new buyers round the ring ensuring a flying calf trade, British Blue bulls topped at £490 from J Hornby & Son, Stank. Other British Blue bulls sold to £485 twice at four weeks old from A Pickthall, New Hutton. All British Blue bulls forward averaged £310. Limousin bulls sold to £450 from J Hornby & Son, Stank. British Blue heifers sold twice to £470 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. Limousin heifers sold to £380 from J Hornby & Son, Stank who sold others to £370. Black and Whites met a nice trade with the best rearers selling over the £100 mark topping at £155 from J Hornby & Son, Stank.
A mixed offering of 70 stirks were forward, a run of suckler bred 4 month old stirks from M&S Blease, Carnforth sold to £710 for Limousin bullocks with others from the same home selling to £690. Limousin bullocks sold to £690 from S Whitehead, Middleton. Hereford bullocks sold to £680 from W Stamper, Chipping. Continental bred bullocks at 4-6 month old and well grown were regularly selling at the £550-£650 mark.

Store Cattle
A seasonal entry of store cattle, now starting to show the signs of the change in weather saw buyers showing the keenest interest in the well-bred and those that have been feed. Steers sold to a top price of £1355 for an Aberdeen Angus x from JM Haddow, Hincaster. Closely followed by Limousin x steers from JA Barnes, Whinfell achieving £1265. Other stronger steers generally sold from £1100 to £1200 which included a Hereford x at £1135 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. Younger Steers sold to £995 for a Hereford x from Ireland Farm, Kirkby Lonsdale followed by £970 achieved for 13 month old British Blue x from ST Birkett & Son. Dairy bred steers sold to £890 for a Holstein Friesian from CR Ford & Son, Ulverston who also sold Montbeliarde at £870.
Heifers saw a top price of £1180 achieved by JM Haddow, Hincaster for a Charolais. Limousin x sold to £1105 from Pearson & Jackson, Crook with others at £1100 from D&D Huddleston, Wray. Native sired heifers sold to £1000 for a Hereford x from CR Ford & Son, Ulverston with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £980 from AJ&H Clarke, Sedbergh.

OTM Cattle
Numbers continue to raise at this popular fortnightly sale with 87 forward today, selling to an overall market average of 171p/kg. Heavy well finished beef cows sold to a top of 221.5p/kg for a British Blue x from A Winder & Son, Kirkby Stephen. A Limousin x cow from BJ Bowness, Kendal achieved 209.5p/kg. A Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside achieving 204.5p/kg, as did JF&C Saunders selling a Simmental cow. Other cows to break the £2 barrier included a Blonde from JA&J Harper, Sedbergh, with a Hereford from GM Redmayne falling just short at 199.5p/kg. A keen interest in cows suitable for finished regularly achieving 180-195p/kg depending on quality and type. Dairy cows sold to a top of 191.5p/kg for a British Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness with a Holstein Friesian selling to 181.5p/kg from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with others to 174.5p/kg from W Beck & Son, Tebay. Medium dairy cows generally were between 145-160p/kg with leaner and parlour types 120-140p/kg. Top grossing cow today was a heavy weight Aberdeen Angus from RJ&J Gardner, Natland achieving £1771, this was closely followed by JF&C Sanders, Marton selling a Simmental at £1740 with Stabiliser to £1666 and £1637 from A Dixon & Son, Selside. British Blues sold to £1587 from S Whitehead, Middleton. Dairy cows sold to a top price of £1482 for a Holstein Friesian from Jenkin Cragg Farms, Kendal with others at £1465 from W Beck & Son, Tebay.
OTM heifers saw a top price of 224p/kg for a British Blue x from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale with Stabilisers to 209.5p/kg from A Dixon & Son, Selside and Limousins to 204.5p/kg from AP&R Crowe, Rusland. Dairy heifers sold to 197.5p/kg for a Friesian from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness. Top grossing heifer was a Stabilisers achieving £1330 with others at £1309 from A Dixon & Sons, Selside and diary heifers sold to £1155 for a Holstein Friesian from KT Robinson, Farlton.
OTM steers sold to 194.5p/kg and £1058 for a Friesian from B Wilson, Crossthwaite.
Cull bulls sold to 184.5p/kg from a Limousin from SJ&NS Wood, Windermere with an Aberdeen Angus from HMP Wymott, Kirkham achieving £1739.
This sale concluded with a dedicated section for untested cattle from TB1 parishes which saw cows sell to 209.5p/kg and £1552 for a Limousin x, others sold at 184.5p/kg and £1518.
