Prime pigs sell to £205 at NWA J36.
Another super entry of prime pigs were once again a pleasure to sell with buyers in attendance keen to secure prime pigs for a range of outlets. For the second sale in a row prime pigs from J Stott, Crosscrake topped the market with an impressive trio of Pietrain x Saddleback gilts and hogs achieving £205. This was closely followed by CR Dickinson, Thurnham selling large white x gilts and hogs at £198, £192, £185. Other heavy white gilts from E Spedding & Son, Egremont. Medium weighted pigs sold to £158 from M & S Blease, Carnforth with others at £142 from AP Smith, Brookhouse and £138 GG & MA Long, Pennington. Top p/k this week was 195p/kg from J Stott, Crosscrake. All prime pigs today averaged 156p/kg.
Several cull sows forward selling to £100 and 37p/kg from Messrs Edmondson, Ambleside with lighter weights to £55 and 31p/kg from B Capstick, Sedbergh.
Store Pigs sold to £50 for large white from E Spedding, Egremont with others at £45 from E & K Thorpe, Waterfoot. Weaners sold to £45 for GOS x from MK & LK Whitley & Son, Harrogate who sold others at £43. Coloured weaners sold to £19.
PRIME LAMBS
The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an netry of 1226 forward selling to a very two tiered trade lambs well finished and heavy continue to be in strong demand and eagerly bid for with a larger qyuantity of leaner grass feds types of lambs being penalised by buyers ringside. Heavy weights continue to see good returns topping at £139 from Richard Batty, Heversham with Texel lambs. This was followed by £136 twice from J & R Waller, Killington and Jack Turnbull, Meathop both consignors with Texels. The trade for heavy weight Suffolk’s peaked at £133.50 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet. Plenty more pens sold in the mid to late one hundred and twenties.
There was an overall market average of 218p/kg.
CAST SHEEP
800 cast sheep saw well meated sheep one again sell to a premium with many more needed to fulfil buyers requirements. Leaner ewes sold to a little less demand today. Beltex ewes sold to a top of £220 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. Texel ewes selling to £140 from Archers, Bolton Le Sands. Many of the best Texel ewes sold around the £120-£130 mark. Mule ewes top at £111 from Archers, Bolton Le Sands. There wasn’t as much steam in the Mule ewe trade today, with the best regally selling at £90-£95. A larger show of hill ewes were forward with Cheviots selling to £76 from J&A Smales, Ingleton.
