J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. 8th March 2022

Sheep with lambs at foot

The opening sale of sheep with lambs at foot for the 2022 season at Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre had an entry in excess of 60 families or over 170 lives. Strong Continental ewes with Texel twin lambs at foot led the way, selling to £300 an outfit from J&R Waller, Killington. Mule ewes with strong twin Texel lambs at foot sold to a top of £260 from TW Gorst, Crook. Sheep with stronger twin lambs regularly sold between £240-£260 with buyers slightly cautious of younger lambs. Sheep with single lambs met big demand today, with Mule two crops with strong Texel singles selling to £195 from Freddie Willison, Levens. Continentals with single lambs sold to £192 from JW&E Woof & Son, Sedbergh and £185 from TA Teasdale, Newton in Cartmel. Prime Hoggs

There was an increased entry of 833 prime hoggs forward selling to a very similar trade to the previous week. Handy weighted hoggs averaged 255p/kg with an overall market average of 245p/kg. Heavy weight hoggs led the way with Texels selling to £147 from K&S Troughton, Sedbergh. Followed by £145 from J Twigge, Lindale, heavy weight Suffolks peaked at £143 from DA Wilcocks, North Ashton, followed by £139 from M&YA Barker, Halton. Heavy weight Cheviots peaked at £134 from J Woodburn and Partners, Ulverston. The Beltex trade today peaked at £138 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Beltex hoggs selling to 315p/kg from G Riley, Bolton Le Sands. The heavy weight trade continues to see caution from buyers but plenty of demand for them at J36. Handy weighted hoggs continue to be in the strongest demand and keenly sort after. A good proportion of the sale forward was upland hoggs that saw heavy weight Mashams sell to £117.50 from JE Reed, Hutton Roof. Rough Fell hoggs sold to £115 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. Swaledale hoggs peaked at £110 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasedale.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade continues to go from strength to strength with a blistering trade once again enjoyed at Junction 36, with vendors strongly urged to take advantage of this trade. Cast tups led the way with Texels from TH&D Cornthwaite & Son, Grange Over Sands selling to £190 and £182. This was closely followed by other Texel tups to £151 from M&RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. The ewe trade peaked at £160 from RA Clegg and LD Bennett, Broughton in Furness. Texel x ewes sold to £153 and £149 from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton. Suffolk x ewes sold to £150 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale with others to £146. Plenty of Continental x and Suffolks ewes sold in the region of £140. Mule ewes saw the best to £141 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands, £139 from JBL&I Ellis, New Hutton and £139 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Plenty of strong Mule ewes sold in the region of £130. Horned sheep peaked at £117 for Rough Fells from Amy Harrison, Kentmere with others to £108 from both TLB&J Knowles, Selside and J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Swaledale cast ewes sold to £101 from RF&CE Hodgson, Ulverston followed by £99 from R&EA Gardner, Kendal.
