J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle - 3rd March 2022

Calves & Stirks
A small show of calves were forward, with all selling to their full value. The sale topped at £410 twice for British Blue bulls from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Other British Blue bulls sold to £400 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Continental bull calves were regularly selling at the £350-£400 mark. Heifer calves saw a top of £340 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth, followed by others the £320 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Dairy bred bull calves were a strong trade with Fleckveihs selling to £185 from RG&JA Clark, Endmoor with a young show of Black and Whites forward topping at £82 from JW&TE Sharp.
The sale of stirks saw an ever-increasing ring side of keen buyers keen to secure all classes and types, which saw a top price of £895 achieved for a pair of Blonde x heifers from B&HM Wilson, Selside who sold steers of the same breed to £800. Dairy bred stirks sold to £780 for Limousin x steers, with British Blue x steers to £765, Holstein Frisians sold to £635 and Aberdeen Angus x to £605. Younger steers sold to £580 for British Friesians, with Dairy Shorthorn to £495.

Store Cattle
The catalogue entry of 571 store cattle created much interest throughout England with cattle purchased on seventy different accounts. The pre sale show was kindly judged by Mark Stamper of Cockermouth, who we thank for his time and expertise. The champion rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer lot number 353 consigned by MD&JA Winn, this wonderful British Blue heifer went on to achieve £1600. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the same good farming family with the first prize British Blue bullock selling for £1410. We would like to thank all the vendors for supporting the show and congratulate them on the quality of the cattle forward.
High end quality cattle were a fierce trade here at J36, with Limousin bullocks from PW Clarke selling to £1480, with a wonderful pure Limousin heifers sold for future breeding from Thrimby Farms achieved £1460. Yearling bullocks were in keen demand with the best regularly selling above the £1200 mark, with cattle outside the show topping at £1310 for a Limousin bullocks from D&A Nicholson, Ulverston. Other Limousins sold to £1300 from A&P Hodgkinson, Poulton Le Fylde. A great run of 50 Charolais bullocks and heifers from local farm M Parker, Great Langdale sold best to £1200 at eleven months old.
The heifer trade was strong from start to finish with butch type heifers in keen demand with British Blues selling to £1280 from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale. Other British Blue yearling heifers sold to £1270 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Limousins sold to £1230 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. The best yearling heifers were regularly selling between the £1100-£1200 mark, with good grazing cattle around £900-£950. A strong trade was achieved for all bulls forward with 30 going through the ring, selling to a top of £1130 for an eight month Limousin bull from K Thomas, Firbank.

OTM Cattle
A total of 44 OTM cattle were sold today with an overall market average of 162p/kg. Cull cows peaked at 217.5p/kg for a pure Limousin from BT Atkinson, Ulverston who sold others at 199.5p/kg. Other heavy well fleshed beef cows were regularly 175-190p/kg with dairy cows selling to a top price of 177.5p/kg from AE&MK Hayhurst, Natland, with others at 171.5p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness. Buyers were keen to secure cows for all types of orders, with keen interest in cows suitable for future finishing. Top grossing cow today was a pure Limousin achieving £1589 from BT Atkinson, Ulverston. Dairy cows sold to £1201 from JW Hargreaves, Broughton in Furness. OTM heifers sold to 219.5p/kg and £1275 for a Fleckvieh from RW Nicholson, Lupton. Others sold to £179.5p/kg and £1032 for a British Blue x from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite. A single cull bull sold to 151p/kg or £1705 for a Simmental from Kirkby & Longworth, Broughton in Furness.
