J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 1st March 2022

Prime Hoggs

There was the full spectrum of prime hoggs forward today, ranging from 21kg to 70kg. Of the 821 hoggs forward, 291 were Horned and 125 were Mules, which were met by a busy ring of twelve active buyers which included three local butcher outlets whom were short of quality hoggs to fulfil their requirements. Top spot today was £142 for 50kg Texels from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside. Heavy weight Texel hoggs from M&S Blease, Carnforth sold to £141.50 and £141. Other noted prices for heavy weight Texels were £140 and £139 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill. The consignment from LF Horton & Son, Nantwich saw Charolais hoggs to £139 and £137. Suffolk hoggs from the same home sold to £130. The Suffolk trade was topped by the first spring lambs of the season selling to £140 or 298p/kg. It was wonderful to have a large number of hill bred hoggs on the market today, which saw heavy weight Mules sell to £128 from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Plenty of pens of standard weight Mule hoggs selling in the one hundreds and teens. Horned hoggs peaked today at £120 from JA Alderson, Kirby Stephen. Plenty of pens of well finished grazing hoggs sold in excess of the £100 mark.

Cast Sheep

A mixed show of cast ewes were forward with quality and meat selling to a massive premium at J36. Texels sold to £166 from H Newton, Kendal, with other Texels to £144 for a full pen from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Beltex ewes sold to £159 from Linda Beck, Heaversham. Suffolk ewes sold to £136 from H Newton, Levens. Continental bred ewes were regularly selling at the £120-£130 mark. Mule ewes saw the biggest lift on the week with a top of £136 from JN&DL Bowes, Crook, with the best regularly selling well into the one twenties. Hill ewes sold to £109 for Rough Fells from AJ&CM Harrison, Kentmere. Swaledales sold to £104 from WM&JE Shuttleworth, Barbon. The best Swaledales regularly sold into the nineties, with medium types around £65-£70. Cheviots sold to £103 from D Carradice, Whinfell.
All cast rams continue to be another strong trade at J36 with a top of £142 for Leicester rams from WM&JE Shttleworth, Barbon.
