Breeding Sheep

Numbers remain good coming forward for the time of year with just over fifty families forward. Leading the way was the consignment from AJ Robinson, Carnforth selling pens of continental and Suffolk ewes with twin lambs selling to £255, £250 and £230. Texel hoggs with Beltex lambs at foot twice sold to £220 from A & M Skidmore, Tebay. Swaledale ewes with twin Mules sold to £138 from the same home.

Prime Lambs

The largest entry so far of the season saw 1157 forward selling to an overall market average of 302p/kg with handy weights averaging 307p/kg. The market peaked at £169 for a 55kg Texel lamb from J & R Waller, Killington purchased by Westmorland Servives. This was followed by other Texel to £168 from WS Burrow and Sons, Silverdale, £166 from E Dodgson, Kendal and £160 from JA Airey, Kendal with many more pens of good quality Texel’s with weight selling in the one hundred and fifties. Hampshire lambs sold to a top of £168 at 55kg from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor. Continental lambs peaked at £163 at 48kg from S Proctor, Selside. Charolais lambs sold to a top of £156 from M Moorhouse, Grange Over Sands with Suffolk’s also peaking at £156 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Beltex lambs sold to a top of 360p/kg or £157 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington with plenty pens of better conformation lambs selling between 330p/kg and 350p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

The demand for well fleshed hoggs remains strong. Leading the way was a heavy weight Texel hoggs from RJ Stott, Stainton selling to £165 with other Texel’s selling to £156 from AW & D Brown, Ulverston. Suffolk’s sold to £158 and £150 from AJ Robinson, Carnforth. Upland hoggs saw Cheviots selling to £140 from Stockdale farms. When fleshed hogg will be required in the upcoming weeks.

Cast Sheep

• Leicester tups sold to £256 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston with Cheviots from the same home to £238.
• Texels ewes sold to £170 from E Dodgson, Kendal.
• Leicester ewes sold to £170 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston.
• Mule ewes sold to £148 from FW Park, Windermere, all Mules forward averaged £118.
• Rough Fells sold to £128 from AEA Harrison, Kentmere.
• A pen of seventeen Swaledale ewes sold to £115 from AR Edmondson, Ulverston.
