Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 8th July 2022.

Calves & Weanlings

There was an entry of 64 calves and weanlings forward, weanlings continue to demand a premium in Lancaster with a run of British Blues from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel selling bulls to £505 twice and £480 with heifers to £410. Hereford weanling bulls from TE&M Kidd, Ellel sold to £420 and £400 twice. Aberdeen Angus weanling bulls peaked at £400 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with weanling Holstein Friesians from the same home sold to £390.
The calf trade peaked at £420 for a British Blue at 7 weeks old from H&C Pickervance, Kirkham with others to £350. Aberdeen Angus bull calves sold to £390 from JP&C Robson, Catterall. Plenty of calves today sold in the early £300’s. Dairy bull calves saw Fleckviehs sell to £265 from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe who also topped the Friesian bull calve section selling to £120.

Store Cattle
Lancaster enjoyed a buoyant trade once again for store cattle with the impressive consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse stealing the headlines, a pen of three Hereford bullocks sold to £1710 followed by a pen of six British Blue bullocks selling to £1700. Other beef bullocks from the same home saw Hereford to £1690 and Aberdeen Angus’s to £1680. A Holstein Friesian bullock also from the same home sold to £1690. Next call was £1610 from for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus bullocks from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. The consignment from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton saw Limousin bullocks to £1590, Charollais bullocks to £1580 and Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1570. British Blue bullocks sold to £1580 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. Plenty of strong bullocks sold in the region of £1500. The heifer trade peaked at £1380 for a British Blue from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse, this was followed by a run of heifers from JB Moore, Grange Over Sands selling Aberdeen Angus’s to £1370, £1360 and £1340 with British Blues from the same home to £1330.

OTM / Cast Cattle
• 92 OTM cattle and cast cattle forward averaged £1109 a head or 185.9p/kg with buyers commenting on the trade remaining as strong as ever.
• OTM Heifers peaked at 244.5p/kg or £1493 for a Hereford from Lucus Breeding.
• OTM Steers sold to 237.5p/kg and 231.5p/kg from KH Knowles, Inskip.
• Top price per head for Hereford steers was £1427 from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling.
• Cast bulls sold to 234.5p/kg or £1643 for a 2 year old Aberdeen Angus bull from JW Thwaites, Tebay.
• Beef cast cows saw the consignment of South Devons and Hereford from Lucus Breeding steal the headlines selling to 234.5p/kg, 231.5p/kg, 229.5p/kg, 227.5p/kg twice and 224.5p/kg. The Lucus Breeding consignment of cows sold to £1746, £1695, £1681, £1672 and £1647.
• Aberdeen Angus beef cows sold to £1726 from CG Birkett, Carnforth.
• Best dairy cows once again sold in excess of 200p/kg, selling to 209.5p/kg from GJ&G Billington, Garstang.
• Top price per head for dairy cows was £1809 and £1748 from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale, £1634 for a Swedish Red from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel with Holsteins to £1603 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.
