Pigs sell to £182 at North West Auctions Junction 36
The second pig sale of January saw a reduced entry following the previous record sale entry. This sale saw 89 forward in all classes with new customers once again in attendance both buying and selling. The sale commenced with prime pigs which saw an eye-catching pen of Pietrain x hogs from D Nicholson, Cockermouth sell at a well deserved £182 a head with others at £150 a head. Lighter weight gilts from the same home achieved £134 a head. Northrigg Hill Farm, Carlisle travelled down with a consignment of heavy weigh Large White gilts which met keen interest selling to £132 a head. Prime boars sold to £88 a head for pure bred Saddlebacks from A Preston, Whitehaven. Well bred and well finished prime pigs continue to sell to a premium, this week peaking at 169p/kg with others 149p/kg, 139p/kg and 136p/kg with all sold averaging 118p/kg.
Cull sows continue to be hard work, this week selling to £38 and 13p/kg from JAH Lowe, Bolton.
An abundance of store and weaner pigs sold to £70 for a pure Pietrain boar from D Thackery, Harrogate who sold others at £56, with J&L Tyson, Carnforth selling to £28. Weaners generally sold between £5-£15 depending on breed and quality.
