J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 18th January 2022

PRIME HOGGS
This week at J36 saw an increased entry of 1178 prime hoggs forward selling to a very similar trade to the previous week with an overall market average of 256p/kg. A ring of ten active buyers at J36 ensured all types were eagerly bid with handy weighted continued to be in strongest demand, heavies slightly easier but still well sold at J36 and lights good to sell as long as they were well finished. Better quality handy weighted Beltex lambs continue selling in excess of the 300p/kg mark with the consignment from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal topping the trade selling at £149 or 340p/kg followed by other Beltex lambs selling to £145 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Heavy weight hoggs continue to be in strong demand at J36 with Suffolk’s selling to £148.50 from Lewis McCarrick, Chorley with others from the same home selling to £140.50 and £139. Continental hoggs from AW & AM Clarke, Windermere sold heavy weights to £146 with heavy Texel’s to £141 from JA & KJ Allen, Ings. Plenty more pens of heavy weighted hoggs easily selling in the one hundred and thirties. Upland hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £128 from GM Metcalfe, Underbarrow. Mules peaked at £125 from John Twigge, Lindale with plenty of well finished Mules selling around the one hundred and twenty mark. Horned hoggs twice peaked at £111 for Rough Fells from MP & H York, Sedbergh with Dalebreds selling to the same from R Capstick & son, Ingleton.

CAST SHEEP
Another good entry of 600 ewe were forward, with trade flying from start to finish. Pure bred Texel ewes lead the way selling to £180 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with other Texels from the same home selling to £162. Suffolk ewes sold to £157 from H Wilson, Selside. Leicester ewes sold to £162 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Many Continental ewes regularly sold in the £120-£130. Mule ewes sold to a fast trade, topping at £125 from S Mawson & Son, Orton with others to £124 from Low Moor Howe, Winster. The next level down was selling at the £100-£110 mark. Cheviot Mules sold to £116 from R&E Ladds, Kendal with a full pen of Masham ewes from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsledale selling to £112. Cheviot ewes led the hill section today selling to £135 from Low Moor Howe, with other Cheviots selling to £109 from Stockdale Farm, Sedbergh. Rough Fells sold to £104 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. All Swaledales sold to a strong trade, topping at £98 from Low Moor Howe with 110 Swaledale ewes forward averaging £68. Herdwick ewes sold to a keen interest with a pen of 26 sellign to £76 from SW&A Hoggarth, Seathwaite. Others sold to £69 from MR Tomms, Great Langdale.
Texel tups sold to £160 from PK&R Woof, Stainton with Charollais to £146 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. 30 tups forward averaged £115.
