J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 11th January 2022

PRIME HOGGS

The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw an entry in excess of 1000 forward meeting more demand then
expected and selling to a strong overall market average of 258p/kg, consider the large number of
upland and horned bred lambs in the market today. The ring was back to full capacity of buyers
today with a fresh face forward, ensuring all types were eagerly bid for and a shortage of them
better lambs in the market today. J36 continues to offer a strong trade for them heavy weight lambs
and they continue to add up well with us. The consignment of heavy weight hoggs from WT
Whitaker & Son, Nether Kellet led the way selling to a top of £163 with 62kg Texel hoggs, with
Suffolk’s from the same home selling to £155 and the consignment averaging £142.55. The Suffolk
hogg trade peaked at £159 for heavy weights from J & C Airey, Ulverston. Texel hoggs at 53kg from J
Woodburn and Partners, Ulverston sold to £148 with this price matched by a pen of Suffolk lambs
from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. A consignment of Suffolk and Texel hoggs averaging 54kg sold to an
average of £142.75 from L McCarrick, Chorley.
Plenty pens of better-quality conformation hoggs sold between 280 and 300p/kg at handy weights
with this weight range in best demand. The trade sold to 300p/kg numerous times from A & B Fell,
Millom, DC, D & J Taylor, Kendal and WL & F Richards, Kirkby in Furness.
Upland lambs saw heavy Cheviots sell to £132.50 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg followed by others
selling to £130 from J & C Airey, Ulverston with Cheviot Mules selling to £129.50 from J Woodburn
and Partners, Ulverston. Mule lambs at 50kg peaked at £124.50 from EW & JR Parkinson, Clitheroe.
A larger number of horned lambs in the market saw Rough fells sell to £104 from TLB & J Knowles,
Selside.

CAST SHEEP

380 ewes were forward today with trade going from strength to strength at J36. Texels once again lead the way topping at £155 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Many of the best Texel ewes were regularly selling at the £140 plus mark. Pure Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £144 from J&C Airey, Ulverston. Leicester ewes sold at a top of £142 from Mr Kipling, Greenholme. Mule ewe trade stepped up another level, with a top of £127 from E&J Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg. With others too £126 from A&B Pickthall, Hincaster. The next level down Mule sold between the £105-£110 mark. Hill ewes continue to sell to a fast trade with Cheviot topping this section at £121 from J Allonby & Son, Grayrigg with others from the same home selling to £119. Rough Fells sold to £100 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay. Anthony Hartley had a good day in the cast ring selling Swaledales to £86 and Herdwicks to the same price. A run of Herdwick shearlings from CS Long & RH Knipe, Ayside sold to £88 for a pen of 26. Cast Rams continued to be a flying trade at J36, with Texel rams selling to £218 from D Jackson, Cartmel. With hill rams selling to £133 for a Rough Fell from BJ Bainbridge, Shap. With Swaledales selling to £102 from RS&BA Harker, Holme.
