J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 20th December 2022

Prime Lambs

A much-improved trade for the sale of prime lambs at Junction 36, saw a reduced entry of 800 forward selling to an overall market average of 255p/kg. Heavy weight lambs were in big demand and saw 59kg Texels to £165 and 58kg lambs to £162 from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston. This was followed by other heavy weight Texel lambs to £157 from J Mason, Over Kellet and £146 for Texels from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Kendal. Heavy weight Suffolks peaked at £150 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall with others from the same home to £141. Heavy weight Horned lambs sold to £148 from Stockdale Farms with heavy weight Cheviots to £142 from the same home. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs were easily in the one thirties today. Best quality lambs sold in excess of 300p/kg today. The consignment from JG&PH Thompson, Selside to 340p/kg, 330p/kg and 318p/kg with others from AR&BJ Thompson, Selside to 335p/kg. Mule lambs peaked at £127 from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands. Handy weighed Continental lambs saw well finished lambs regularly selling between 265p/kg and 275p/kg. Light weight hill lambs were a sharper trade with 34kg Herdwicks to £81 from Kevin Wrathall, Broughton in Furness.

Cast Sheep

850 ewes forward sold to a much improved trade, Texel ewes sold to a top of £252 from PK&R Woof, Stainton who sold others to £222. One hundred and two Texel ewes averaged £116 a head. Mule ewes sold to a top of £124 from Calderside Farms, Oakenclough with others selling to £122 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Two hundred and thirty Mule and Masham ewes averaged £90. Hill ewes saw the biggest lift on the week with Cheviots selling to a top of £126 from Wannop Farms, Heaton who sold also sold other full pens to £110. Swaledales topped at £110 for a pen of fourteen from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other pens of Swaledale selling to £93 from Calderside Farms. Rough Fells sold to £84 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. A run of sixty strong Herdwick ewes from AR Edmondson, Ulverston sold to an impressive top of £74 for a pen of ten.
Thirty cast rams were forward with all selling to their full value, Leicester tups sold to £150 from AR Edmondson with others to £139 from JS&S Atkinson, Scorton. Texel sold to a top of £130 from K Wrathall, Broughton in Furness who also sold Swaledale rams to £100.
