Sheep with Lambs at Foot

All classes of sheep with lambs at foot were a sharper trade with the most demand seen ringside so far this season.
Continental ewes with twins sold to £280, averaging £229.
Mule ewes with twins sold to £260, averaging £213.
Continental ewes with singles sold to £220, averaging £171.
Mule ewes with singles sold to £200, averaging £161.
Cheviot ewes with twins sold to £170, averaging £168.
Cheviot ewes with singles sold to £195, averaging £167.

Prime Hoggs

A better show of prime hoggs in terms of quality were met more demand ringside with all buyers noticeably keener for all speciation’s of hoggs. There was an overall market average of 254p/kg, with handy weights averaging 268p/kg. Trade peaked at £166 for heavy weighted Charollais from JA&R Geldard & Son, Levens.

Cast Sheep

The cast ewe trade goes from strength to strength, Leicester ewes won the top spot today selling to £210 from Strickland Hill Farming with other Leicester ewes selling to £197 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale. The Ayrton Family continued their good day at the mart with their Texels cast ewes selling to a top of £208. The best pure bred Texel ewes were regularly selling at the £190-£200 mark. A run of Lleyn ewes from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens sold to a top of £157. Mule ewes were a faster trade than last week, selling to a top of £154 from LE&A Ridding, Selside with others to £152 from M&JW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. 110 Mule ewes were forward averaging £115. Rough Fell ewes sold to an impressive £129 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill who also sold a pen of Scotch ewes to £118. Swaledale ewes topped at £119 from LM Berry, Cartmel with others to £117 twice from J&J Postlethwaite, Howgill and D Sharp, Lyth. The best meated Swaledale ewes were selling well over the £100 mark.
The cast ram trade gets better and better, Texel rams sold to a top of £252 from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft, whom also sold Cheviots to £210. Other noted prices for Texels included £208 from D&J Woof, Downbiggin. Hill tups sold to £168 for Scottish Black Faces from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. All types of cast ewes and rams are required for next week sale.
