J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 28th September 2021

RIME LAMBS

An increased number of prime lambs forward this week at J36 were met with increased demand from the ring of buyers at J36 this week. buyers eager to purchase well finished lambs with vendors whom had fed them hard feed receiving the benefit of a stronger trade with leaner types meeting realisation. There were an entry of 1317 prime lambs selling to an overall market average of 228p/kg to include a large number of mules and hill bred lambs. Once again at J36 them well finished heavy weight lambs continue to be in big demand and commanding a strong trade. leading the way was a consignment of heavy weight lambs from WT Whitaker and Son, Nether Kellet selling to £143 with Suffolk lambs with Texel’s from the same home selling to £138 with this consignment of 30 lambs averaging £139. Heavy weight Texel lambs this week peaked at £138.50 from JA Bennett, Longseddale. Other leading prices for heavy weight Texel lambs was £135.50 from R &EA Gardner, Brigsteer at 54kg with other Texel’s to £135 from A Holden, Burton in Kendal and WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs selling in excess of the £125 mark with all heavy weight lambs forward sold to an average of 236p/kg.

There were more better confirmation lambs forward today meeting an increased demand from our buyers for them better types of lambs. Beltex lambs sold to 277p/kg from RJ Potter, Tebay followed by others to 265p/kg from WS Burrow and Sons, Silverdale. Plenty them better confirmation lambs selling in the region of 260p/kg. Handy weighted lambs selling between £5 and £10 up on the week. Well finished light lambs short in number and in strong demand in which more could of easily been sold to the advantage of the vendors.

Great to have a larger entry of mules forward today and being eagerly bid for. Mule peaked at £108 weighing 50kg from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale followed by 48kg Mules to £104 from GA & M Robinson, Kendal. All mules forward averaged 210p/kg.

CAST SHEEP
A bumper entry of 800 cast ewes were forward with several new buyers in attendance, ensuring all types were dear on the week. JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens led the way in the cast sheep ring selling Charollais to £137 with the best of the Texels selling to £134 from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg with other Terxels from selling to £130 from D&J Woof, Sedbergh. Many of the best Texel ewes sold between the £120 and £125 mark. A run of Zwartble ewes from TMW&H Hodgson, Nibbthwaite. sold to £121 and £110. Mule ewes were considerably dearer on the week with the best peaking at £110 from AW Crowe, Grange over Sands with other Mules selling to £108 from DM Bargh, Morecambe. Medium type Mule ewes were regularly selling well above the £80 mark. Hill bred sheep were keenly bid for, with a full pen of Cheviot ewes selling to £90 from WL&FD Richards, Beckside. A strong run of Swaledale ewes from R Harker & Son, Grayrigg which sold to a top of £78. Medium fit Swaledale ewes sold to the mid to late fifty mark. Dalesbred ewes sold to a top of £73 from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor.
A small show of cast rams were forward with Texels selling to £152 twice from GR Wilson, Natland and Charollais selling to £135 from J&L Tyson, Milnthorpe. J36 has an impressive ring side of buyers, who can cater for all types and finish of sheep.
